wholesaler/distributor

Hello all,
I'm located in Chicago, IL
I've been trying to get into the electronics business for some time now.. haven't been able to find any wholesalers or distributors in the U.S. Only ones i can find are ones in China, I would like to stay away from anything overseas for I've heard of many stories of things not going smoothly. If there are any people in this field please let me know. I'd greatly appreciate it

If you're looking for branded electronics, like nokia, apple, etc., you should note that while they may be manufactured in China, they are usually sold through authorized distributors in your own country, and not China.

The majority of "bad stories" you'll hear is because a buyer attempted to purchase name brand goods (sony, apple etc.) from China, despite the fact that these goods are not sold outside of authorized distributors, which you can usually find on the brand holders website.

Good luck, hope that helps!

I think Apple has a requirement that your company must have made 100,000+ before you make an order. I was told this by other people who have contacted apple, so it is not definately true. But all I'm saying is that I think you have to make big orders when you go to big companies.. if Im wrong please could somebody correct me..

Yeah... just by hearing that it is obviously wrong...
A requirement of making $100,000 means a tiny company could be in that band, and that is not what Apple look for. They want reputable retailers selling their items, there would be no dollar amount requirement in earnings which states you can or can't distribute a product.

DUC-E CHICAGO, China is a great place to get electronics as most electronics (even the big brands) are made there. The thing you should NOT do in China is buy anything that has been pre-branded with a well known brand, as they are rip-offs of the big brands. As S Lee said, companies get their products made in China though the ONLY way to get those products is through a designated distributer in your part of the world.
If you are a start-up electronics retailer, it is going to be a hard job to get any big brand to supply to you directly - and using un-branded products from China (which can come with manufacturer's warranty in most cases) is the best option for you at this early stage (you could even get your own brand put on them). This is great as it is cheaper, very easy to find, and you can still be selling good quality products from Chinese manufacturers.

Hope that helps.
If you need any help sourcing send me a message and I will help you out.

I'm also a newbie with import/export and I had a bit of success in combing through craigslist for some products like laptops, but it was rare that i found a good deal. I also happened meet a guy that owns his own cellphone store and he allowed me to put some orders through him, but I'm always looking for legit direct resellers. There's no money in getting products from a resellers middleman.

Good luck, hope we can share ideas.
