    * actually, I had thought of speeddating, but its not an ideal venue for it - all the seats are tiered, and facing one way!

Another idea is a live music concert - free entry but the bands have to pay £25 for a 15 min "set", and they can sell their merchandise afterwards to the audience. Trouble there is that setting up bands takes 30 mins minimum, and they all need a soundcheck first.

I'd also have to fill 8 15 min slots, and do a hugely fast turnaround just to break even on the first two hours.

Hmmm, I'm not sure how you could get around selling the food and drink. Maybe tell them that you will sell at a markup of 50% and give them 25%? Or some other percentage. Personally, I dont think that the band idea will work for the reasons that you have said. Live tv could be ok, but you need something that will promote talking and set the right mood. Although it depends on the mood that you are going for!
What day are you planning on having it on?

At my University they used to do the same thing, except FREE. Free ATTRACTS people, and consequently, no one showed. Something to think about. I think it`s risky, University students have a lot more going on than worrying about watching a movie.

    Cheers,
    Matthew

You'd be surprised! all they seem to do is spend their overdraft. That said, they are a tight lot - they wont give to charity because they want value for money.

Free generates no oportunity cost factor. If you charge someone, they will invite their friends becuase if they go by themselves it wont be as good. Additionally, they don't pull out of coming because its an opportunity cost of £3 (ticket price). This is why im selling tickets in advance as much as pos.

Ironicly, "free" will attract less people than "value for money"

    ... i hope
