Thinking of Starting an online business for my wife

    Hello,

Since my wife will be going on maternity leave are income will drop and bit and she is keen on doing something from home. She loves jewelery, diamonds lol like any other women does. I did some research and was able to find something very intriguing which could work. I would like any advice.

    The business:

Sell diamonds (loose), earrings, engagement rings
I have located a dropshipper (located here in Canada)
$50 per year for the dropship program
Orders received from the USA are shipped from the US (don't have to deal with customs) -Orders for Canada shipped from Canada.
I don't have to carry any stock which is great.

They have a promotion for $495
You can own your own online store with a professional shopping cart with your own design for only $495 one time design and set up fee fee + $19 per month hosting fees (12 month contract)

A shopping cart with unlimited products !

Featuring a full functional shopping cart which includes almost any feature you can think of !

I understand the marketing of the website would be difficult but no impossible. I have found some websites that use this dropship company and I am able to compete with their prices. Their websites are simple and functional. The webcart they use is provided by Mal's Ecommerce which seems simple to use.

Do I go with them creating me the website? or hire a company to create it?

I know with any business nothing is guaranteed, marketing the website....possible SEO.

Any thoughts, suggestions would be great before I begin my venture. I think being able to sell to North America is a great way to get a piece of the pie.

    Daniel

First let me say that I'm no expert. I'm just starting out myself. BUT since you haven't had any other responses yet, I have to say that what you've described sounds like a terrible deal.

It sounds like that company is a middleman. For less than $300, you can get a list of wholesalers yourself from worldwide brands or salehoo. I'm not endorsing either of them since I've never used them. I guess what I'm saying is that you should do a lot of research before committing to something. I've been researching for a couple of weeks and yours is the most expensive one I've heard of so far.

Go to worldwidebrands.com and read their free e-book Starting Your Internet Business Right. It explains the middleman thing. From what I've read, real dropshippers don't charge you anything above the cost of the item and shipping.

    Good luck!

There is a website/jewelry company called Premier Designs. My best friends sells and does parties and makes awesome supplemental money doing this. It could be something your wife may be interested in - just to get out of the house for a few hours a week at night.
If she is interested in finding out more let me know and i will put her in contact with my friend.

I agree with CenterStar, they sound very expensive and what do you get out of it? A shopping cart that is exactly like every other distributors'.

Since you are going to be new parents perhaps she'd like to look into something in line with child safety or toys or family health? As a mother of two I can attest that your wife is going to be a zombie for the first two months at least- and a clientel of other moms is a lot more understanding than DINK women shopping for diamonds and high end jewelry.

The first warning sign to bad dropshipping company is that they make you pay an annual fee. There is no reason why you should pay this fee. They should make their money off the profit per item.

Second warning of really, really bad dropshipping company. They sell premade websites. Which means everyone else has the some looking website. SE do not take kindly to duplicate websites and will block them on listings.

These people make their money on annual fees and websites not dropshipping.

    Smile Hi There!

I'm not sure if that would be your best bet? I would definetly keep looking into other options, before you made the decision. I'm sure there is a jewelry site out there that you can get for free. Maybe a free online mall. With just a click of a button, these companys can produce a website for you loaded with products. They are basically affiliate sites, where you get paid per sale.

Drawing your first plans in starting up a business should be handed with extended resources. The first thing you should do is to research about your target to manage the expenses as well as the weakness and strengths of your market.
