    Outsourcing software development????????

Hi guys, I own a small education company that creates books and manuals for
students. I wanted to create some learning software and then sell it but I don't know how to program and I can hire one but it would be way too expensive. I was thinking that I should outsource however I am scared that the outsourcing company will steal my idea and then just code their own program. Do you guys have any experience with outsourcing software ?

Can you give us a little more information on what your are trying to accomplish with your learning software? Can you give me an idea what you mean by learning software? (e.g. a quiz program, manual/book reader, etc)

There are a good deal of learning software freely available on the web.Mmight be able to track down a good piece of software, close to what you are looking for, that you could use at no charge. This might be a better avenue to approach since you are hesitant about using a software outsourcing company.

pc.vs.mac, if you want I can either build this thing for you for cheap or else explain how to put together a few existing apps to get the desired result. I am American programmer-freelancer, and I work quickly and cheaply (cheaper than a decent Eastern European contractor). I would be happy to sign whatever papers you want me to sign, and in general I don't steal stuff, like all normal American programmers.

Incidentally, one of my big business ideas I am working on now is remote academic tutoring for overseas Chinese students (e.g. Chinese Americans). For future reference, do you by any chance have such people in your database of paying clients?

There are plenty of Software companies that does 'Product Development' for other companies who don't have the expertise, and they certainly cannot steal the idea. They may have all the legal paper works signed before starting the work. So, fear not PM me I'll connect to you the Company that I trust the most.

There are various ways to protect yourself (your idea, your IP, and what outsourced developers are able to do with it), and it all really boils down to the negotiations process when setting up the deal with the developers.

Generally, someone in your position is going to be a bit at their mercy, as they will present the initial contract terms (and draft). If you want to be covered, it may be a good idea to have a business attorney represent you to negotiate the deal with the developers. If this is something I can help you with, please let me know.

    Evaluate the companies

My company was in a similar situation and we decided to outsource. The issue for us was that we didn't really have the software engineering expertise to evaluate our partner. First we worked with a local company in the NYC area, but that really didn't work out. A friend of mine, who is CIO, told me about a company called IKaru USA. They are located in the Philly area and also have their own software development centers in India. For us it was absolutely the right decision to go with them. Quality is outstanding and so are their response times. We have developed a complete eLearning solution with them (web based) and are currently exploring a desktop and mobile version as well.
