    ansh;

    You having to ask a forum board full of strangers whether this is a good field or not immediately throws up a red flag for me. Why do you want to get into the women's retail business? Are the reasons extrinsic or are they intrinsic? If they are the former you will have a very hard time sticking by and believing in your business.

    There is a good chance that the confusion and worry will never go away but that is what separates the entrepreneurs from the employees; the employees give up growth for comfort but the (successful) entrepreneur will be comfortable being uncomfortable and will give up comfort for growth (confused and worried but always moving forward).

    I suggest you take inventory of your inner self and explore why you would want to start a business. Next I would suggest that you look for something you truly enjoy, believe in, and can find an opportunity doing. We will be here to answer any technical questions but make sure that the business is something you can truly commit to for years to come.

    Good luck to you!

    Well put OneStepAhead,

    I strongly agree with the response. Many have fallen into this trap and some do not think about the future just consistently think about the present and how they can quickly generate revenue. Deciding on a venture needs a precise thought and a well planned business venture. I have learnt that too and YE has offered great advice - I have grown now and still learning, thanx to YE

    Advice? Think carefully about what you are getting into and the rewards of the painful labor you will endure and not look back to say/ask, "Why did I start all of this?" Time wasted never returns...

    All the best Ansh...

    You can use many open-source CMS website or you can create your own project if you are really interested into this field. This maybe a good starting point for you to get a name in the world-wide-web but you must have a lot of knowledge like on women's items so that you webpage will be updated up to the latest designs and fashions for women. Since you're already a software engineer, you should know the hassle you'll need to face when you enter the web world but there's a big chance of success in this field

    ansh,

    First thing first: study. This is not the kind of question you should be asking unless you want overly-generalized answers. Read a couple books on retail industry and retail marketing. Go to Business Plan Software and Free Sample Business Plans - Bplans.com and look at some of the example business plans. Retail is a heavy investment. gross net ratios are usually about 10:1 and thus we have things in america like black friday. The end of the 11th month is when a retail store actually plans to come out of the red and into the black. So being a month late on that deadline is not acceptible after the first year you have a business.

    Figure out where you are going to do this. Saturation has advantages and disadvantages, such as oversupply (disadv) and presence marketing (adv). In other words, a well placed store among a bunch of other stores within the target market you hope to attract brings instant traffic, but you should focus on something that may set you apart just enough that people can't find what you have in the surrounding areas as easily.

    There are a million articles written on plans, marketing, startups and you should read as many as possible, then ask specific questions to people who may have experience (either good or bad) in those areas.
    It's not easy - life - is not easy. If it were, everyone would be doing it.

    Hi ansh
    I am in the UK, I have just joined the site and happened to see your request. You have been given some excellent advice. I would like to ask why you choose the retail trade and will it be in India?
    Regards, D Brawn
