    Decision time

    Hi,
I currently work in a company that work in the financial services sector. I head the overseas department, but am not valued within the company and the directors are init for them selves and couldnt careless about anyone else.

I have been working very hard on a business proposal that i created nearly 3 months ago, I am at a stage now where i need to only present this to the directors for the go ahead. They have absoloutly no idea, i have been working on this business proposal. I believe this idea will definatly work as it replicating, a sales and investing process from other market sectors.

The question i am now asking is shall i not present it to the directors but go ahead and start a business and run this on my own!?

    all help would be appriciated.

    Cheers Ryan

Do you require the aid of your current business to launch your new idea? If not, I would go on my own, we are entrrepreneurs here and dont want to work for anyone else. However, there are many things to be considered, mainly startup costs, which could be backed by your current company. This is one of those things you just need to go with your gut.
    And good luck

Would this service require the current customers of the company you work for? Or is it something where you would not have to compete for customers? If this is being done in other sectors, how are those companies poised to react if you start this up as a small company versus doing it at the company you are currently with?

Depending on the answer you may want to pitch the idea, if they reject it, go out on your own if you feel the market is ripe for it, otherwise rethink the strategy.

    thanks guys

The stratergy will work as i have spoken to many people in the industry sector that also feel it will work. I pitched it as they found out about it from the backups on the computer. They are interested but are not willing to pay the start up costs and contract cost. The company obviously wants me to stay and not go and start up in competition however if i leave the arm of the business WILL not trade. and this may result in the company going under! I dont want my friends being without jobs but in the same breathe i KNOW this will work!

What a situation to be in!lol!

Thanks for all your thoughts so far!

well..sure...ryan, i dunno. you're a switched on guy and so you understand that every man and his dog has a "business proposal" that's "just gonna work"

so, I see what your problem is, and your solution begins with understanding that right now you don't have any thing other than some whacky idea (therefore it's imprudent to quit your job in pursuing it). you don't have customers, management, finance, or anything else that differentiates a whacky idea from a business proposal.

I think that it would be safer for you to conduct a formal set of customer surveys, do some focus groups, sign a letter of intent with a possible employee or distributor, and then pitch your thing as a bona fide business proposal

the first step I would take is to approach your boss about becoming your mentor on this project...pitching business proposals in real life isn't like pitching business proposals on tv..it's a protracted process where you start getting people involved from very early on, give them the opportunity to feel like they own the project and lead them to a place where they ask you to take the thing to the next level

Have you signed any kind of non-compete agreement with your current employer?

    Business Proposal

I must admit this idea isnt a whacky idea nor a idea that may work!

Quite simple this IDEA WORKS! I have discussed it with both previous clients, current clients and other people working in our industry!

In our contract it does say we cannot leave to work in competition however, this goes totally against the EU law of freedom of movement. Also a member of our company left just before christmas to start up in competition and no barriers were put up!

Why in the world would you want to give this idea of yours to these jerks you can't stand? Do you really think they are going to appreciate you? Have they in the past?

    I rest my case!

    A hard decision

Ryan, my name is Howard and I am a profesional life and business coach. I help people get clarity on what they want and are or would like to be prepared for the next step. There is obviously a lot more going on than you were able to cover in your post and it is that underlying situation that has brought you to the place to direct that really needs to be explored. It sounds like what you need help with is not just making the decision, but taking a good look at where you come from, where you are and more importantly where you want to go.
    Regards, Howard

Make SURE your ass is covered then, "jump off the cliff", as my entrepreneurship prof says.
