I have been doing business consulting for around 4-5 years. Send me a PM for contact information, and I'll be happy to provide some advice.

Do you understand the marketing consulting industry at all? Do a little bit of research to get a feel for the typical operations of a marketing consulting firm, lead generation/conversion strategies, etc... Trying to just get a feel for how the business works in general may help to guide you on where to go next.

You should also brainstorm what kind of customer you will be targeting (large business, small business, etc...) and then how specifically you will go about reaching out to them.

Go work for a firm for 4-5 years. Get contacts and then maybe you'll be able to pull this off. You can not start a consulting company with out contacts.

    Hi
If you want to get an overview on how to start a business, a good place to start is at Dynamicbusinessplan.com. From here you can develop your own idea using the framework you read about at Dynamicbusinessplan.com/answer.asp?ID=2

As a framework to build your own business - and to satisfy the information need from the bank - you should fill out the business plan template which you can download in a word document.
The business plan template asks you about 80 business questions. Answer the ones you find relevant for your kind of business. You find free templates here: Dynamicbusinessplan.com/shop.asp

You find specific information about starting a business in US from: SBA.org

I agree with the above posts that you probably need to get more experience. Asking for help starting a business when you are planning on being a consultant seems a little big like going backwards.

If you do, in fact, have plenty of marketing experience and know-how, then it should be fairly simple. Start an LLC or Corporation, print up some business cards, and open a bank account. Your marketing background means that you will know where to go from here.
