I'm a Chinese who has been learning English for more than 15 years. Although I've never lived or studied in ANY English speaking countries, today's open China offers plenty of chances for me to see with my own eyes, hear with my own ears, think with my own mind and, most importantly, get in touch with the outside world and hear stories from both sides. I assure you that there are thousands of young Chinese who're eager to learn and deal with the differences between China and the rest of the world. I'm working with both Chinese and foreigners daily trying very hard to bridge the differences in language, thinking and culture. I'm sure, with the time passing by, shoddy goods suppliers will find no room to survive here, which is good thing to everyone. Given your understanding of the business in China, I think you could do a wonderful job at preparing foreigners with stereotypes about China when they're thinking of doing business with China.

    Good luck!
Wow, for not even setting foot in an English country your English is better than 80% of Americans lol

It's all here.. the good, the bad, and the ugly--have you heard the all the stories about the Chinese getting ripped off by the Africans..do your homework, apply risk management strategies, use sound business practices.

China as well as many other emerging markets is "low cost" with low cost comes higher risk...and if your a newbie or small buyer don't go it alone.

that's China in Western eyes? that depress me.
i have friends in UK and US, they think chinese is warmhearted and nice.
in fact, Chinese company is eager to do biz with Europ and America, as the big market.
most chinere are very nice.some chinese is not honest, but not all.
as a inspector, i work for Randa corp Uk(humphrey's accessoires US) and Swank in US. over 20 factories i visited per year. they export good belts and wallets to American market. you can find their belts, such dockers, levis, tumi.
    my opinion:
    1. visit the factory you want to do biz with before place order
    2. good communication with factory
    3. maybe need a chinese you trust to work for you
    4. before shipment and pay, inspect goods with samples or drawing.
    5. the factory you do biz with, i think Taiwan and HK factories is better,or local people in some area. Taiwan and HK price is higher, but good quality.

Thumbs up We are your solution for dealing with China!

    Dear Reader,

I think there are many difficulties with Chinese suppliers such as reliable and honest agreements, vague terms and conditions, no knowledge about Western customs clearance, unexpected high import costs (all kinds of fees they didnt mention, although it is customs clearance at destination they should at least give a good indication.

Prices are very competitive and products high quality because we understand Western demands.

I have to agree with the original thread to deal with China is very very high risk. THe only companies I would deal from there are perhaps the ones that are paypal enabled.

China business offers a great business opportunity, but there are some challenges that may be involved. The difficulty lies in the fact that most Chinese wholesalers will only accept Western Union and wire transfer payments. These are not secure payment options so they must be treated with caution. Also Getting a credit card in China is an extremely difficult task with a lot of government regulations and strict criteria for getting a card.

Also language and cultural barriers present a number of difficulties to sellers.

I agree with JJoyce - its all out there the good bad and the ugly... bottom line is that you need to do your due dilligence, know who you are dealing with and always bounce ideas off others who have 'been there and done that' ... learn from them and their recommendations and you will reduce your risk factor - you will never ElIMINATE your risk but you can certainly reduce it and share it some times.

    Hi all
I am reading this post with interests, ans as am in china now illd like to share my opinion with you.

Am here inly since almost for months and what i can say is:

1-Yes, many chinese in here (shenzhen electronic huge big city) want to conclude fast deal, so where ever electronics shop you visit, the first question will be "how many", but thanks to god not all are like this, personally those who ask how many i salute them politly and leave quick.

2-Yes, communication is very hard, i do speak 4 languages, and even if i explain many many times adn ask for the deal conditions, there are always some misunderstanding points.

    So why all this:
1-fast deal: becaseu many look at us foreigners (am an arab and not rich at all lol) as rich guys visiting the city to spend huge amount of money (REGULAR salary here in 250$) and as china is exploding in the export business, they automaticly think we are here for big deals.
Why fast: come here and you wont believe your eyes, thousands of factories and thousands of shops, one near the other, you may think so what!!! those thousands of shops sells the same products lol so of course they wanna catch the ccostumer and deal before he pass to the other shop

2-communication: if you take a look ate the chinese language, its not only diffirent, but the logic way is diffirent too.
I before was going crazy the first weeks, because i had to repeat simple questions in english to people who speak very well english, many foreigners get angry quick, but the fact is, that those sellers are not very much used to speak english, they learned it well, they write it well, but they dont speak it all time, so they keep them way (chinese logic) to use it.

The culture diffirence is huge, am starting to love this place because its another world, there is no other word to explain.*

An oriental, african, lived in europe 16 years, and am all time surprised how we think diffirently.

Maybe we learned the same mathematics, but we dont have the same culture lol and this have big effects on the way to communicate.

All of us spent hours chating with chinese sellers on the net, all thought the deal is ok, but believe me even the highly diplomed secratary in a big international company, i spend hours with her to understand her and to make her understand me.

You know the famous (what was the product) slogan: think diffirent! so here they think diffirent, its asia guy, its not the same as europe america or africa.

I do respect that big diffirence, thats why am gonna stay here as long as i can, chinese are very well manared and nice to me because i do my best to understand them and dont jump on quick conclusions.

So guys here what to do:
Ask your questions clearly with the longest sentence possible and easiest words too.
Use polite sentences as much as you can.
Dont hurry in asking the prices or the fast deals, take your time, here they do it as long as you want.
And of course like others posted here, dont judge from the website, or the price of the products, here big companies have amateurs sites, and small fakers have wonderfull sites too.

Try your best to use the voice to communicate, you will notice that half of the sellers were just answering you the same answers they give 100 times a day on the net.

About payement, am a good ebay seller, am a paypal verified member since 5 years and i didnt find yet a way to recieve my paypal money here in china, so its normal that they ask money tranfer, western union adn so.

I just exposed my own peronal experience here, and i talked about shenzhen city, actually the biggest electronic market in the world.

Any questions about how or what, dont hesitate, and please dont make any business request here, we are here to share our opinions about the chinese market.

    Excuse my english
    Best regards to all

I agreeed with terryxu, what we should do before proceed the payment. And i been dealing with China almost 2-5years, so far no problem at all because i always do what terryxu posted above.

And its true there alot of fraud in china, like fake money, low quality , misunderstanding deal and many more.. the best fraud/scam is FAKE FACTORY(eg, this factory offer they services to small businessman/woman to use they factory like they own factory to smoke the customer and scam them.First time, i was totally shocked, but now its normal for me, because i saw alot of fake factory there.

Its the matter of us, we want make deal with them, we have to be good and understand in fraud and scam, so that we will know when they try scam us.

And the common thing in china is, the more you bargin the price, the lower the quality of the products.Check you products before you do the payment. if there 100k of products, hire 5 people to check the products randomly. You wont regret by hiring 5 people to check your products than being fraud victim for 100k products.

Anyway, im new to this forum. Hi all.

    Hahahah...

Can you make money dealing with the chinese? yes.

Is it worth it? I would say, no.

I spent the last 4 years in taiwan and china, learning the language and culture. taiwan is good, but in mainland china I've found that the chinese are terrible people in general, well unless you also think it's perfectly fine to only care about yourself and your family and f@#% everyone else. Not to mention all the political garbage like blocking youtube and facebook and wikipedia was blocked for a long time and then went back up, we'll see in the future. Even though I've spend so much time and effort learning chinese, I would like to see nothing more than the world boycotting china and letting them rot in their own filth...
