Put it like this if you are a great sales person the MLM is for you and if not than leave it alone. people who join mlm's can earn some really good money but you have to know what you are doing. For some reason alot of people hate mlm but not all mlms are the same. SO unless you tried every mlm theres is then maybe you shouldnt hate it as much. Before you join a mlm please do your research. I joined my first ever MLM called the allxclub and i love it so i dont know about you other MLM people but i like mines.

Very interesting debate here, I decided to join
I think that people are taking MLM too seriously. They all want to get multiple streams of income at once. And of course than they start to bother all their friends and relatives. I tried a lot of them, some were OK, some pure loss. My opinon is that MLM will grow also in the future, perhaps a little bit changed in the contents and purpose.
I discovered one MLM which is very nice and interesting. A humanitarian MLM powered with GPN which takes the burden of follow-ups and presentations off your shoulders. You have a choice to be active or passive builder and much more... It's an amazing new movement that helps feed and educate people in need across the world.
So, you just have to be positive in what you are doing and success will come...

It's to bad that you all have been left with a bad taste in your mouth about MLM's. I joined my first mlm type company about three years ago and love it - the thing is that I don't sell any products, so I'm not a sales person. My sole duty is just to drive traffic to my website. So what I have learned over the past few years is a lot about marketing. I actually love it.
Again, its too bad that someone had to spoil the waters for you.
Blessings,

I agree. However, MLM's recruit everyone. They are convinced that everyone has the aptitude, skill and desire to make it. That is why MLM is great in theory, but it is percieved as cheasy in practice.

It's not that they don't understand it. I think the bottom line is that MLM is percieved to be considered risky compared to traditional business. Traditional businesses has a higher survival rate than MLM. More than 95% of associates quit in the first two years.
However, MLM zealouts who continue to recruit anyone with a pulse don't understand that their indiscriminate recruiting contributes to these results.
MLM should have the same number of individuals generating a living wage than traditional business. This is how MLM should perform when effective techniques are used.

MLM creates the incentive to exaggerate claims and push products and services that you have no belief in. Oh wait a second... that sounds like sales

MLM is great, easy to build, lots of potential. You just need to work and people hate to work.

Network Marketing is great...for the owners of the company, heheh.
I did some MLM, actually 3 of them in the past. The reason MLM is such a poor business model is because of a few different reasons:
The products are generally cheap or poorly marketed. MLM companies tell you that "everyone wants/needs this product." Being a direct marketer, I can tell you that this statement is completely false. I market to demographics that I know will want to the product, and do research on it. Not everyone wants the latest Goji drink that will cure cancer, or the nifty gel vitamins. The MLM trainers of the company just tell you this so that it catches on in a cultish way, so that people get motivated to bug everyone in the world about their product. Also, the quality of the products is poor. They generally don't work, taste terrible, have poor service quality, etc.
The MLM marketing method is ridiculous. Why would I want to go pass out DVD's, call my friends and family, or spam people on myspace and tell them about some product that they "need." Marketing is all about creating or giving your audience something that they DO want, or are already looking for. And door to door sales days are over. People dont want that,"Hi I'm George, you look sharp, want to work for my company, or did you know that people drinking this acai pomegranite blend are now literally de-aging,and getting younger." In all honesty, give me the silly berry blend supplement, and I probably could go market it to a certain audience, way better than any MLM method.
The monetization strategy is horrible...once again, unless you own the company. Think about it, why would I buy some supplement at such a horrible margin and go re-sell it. You might as well have your own product made for 1/4 of the price and market it on your own private label. Or really even an affiliate program is a better option. Also, MLM's rely on new blood and the fact that most people that join will do nothing. If you look at many public MLM company financials, you'll be suprised how much money is made from signing new people up vs. actual product sales.
And last, MLM is hard, there are 1000 other easier and more cost effective ways to earn extra or a lot of income.

James, your points are certainly valid. A word on monetization strategies: try MLM companies offer products and an income opportunity. An "MLM" company just looking to signup folks to its income opportunity is actually defined as a pyramid scheme, which is illegal. Therefore, in a true MLM company, "the people coming in at the bottom" are not actually getting scammed. Here's why: they are joining for the product, not just the opportunity.

Agreed,
It is always the quitters who blast MLM, and since 97% plus are quitters in any business venture, not just MLM, it gives the image of being a bad business model.
Like you have done, I look for recession proof business opportunities, and not always MLM deals, but when I see something that sells itself, I will jump on it, and since my forte is SEO and online promotions, AllXClub was just added to my portfolio after watching it closely for the past few months since launched.
Well, I am extremely happy with intitial results, not because of MLM, but because sex is a $100B and growing industry, and bullet proof as well as recession proof, a dynamite combination in my opinion. Sex sells, always has, always will, like it or not, it is about providing what people are always looking for, a way to make money from their computer, MLM or not, it works.
Success to all,
