Unbelievable 750% ROI on Flipped Domain

I sold my first domain for a profit of $130!

I found the domain in the GoDaddy auctions and purchased it for $20 and then parked it at Sedo. It didn’t do as well on Sedo as I was hoping. GoDaddy estimated that I would receive about 70 visitors a month on the domain, but I was only getting about 30 visitors a month. And of those 30 visitors I only made a total of $0.38 from domain parking in one month. It was pretty sad and it didn’t look like I would get back my $20 investment any time soon.

Then I was contacted by a web developer. It turns out that I had purchased a domain that once belonged to someone else and the original owner wanted the domain back. He was willing to pay me for the trouble and based on the value of the domain we negotiated $150. $150 minus the $20 leaves a $130 profit, 750% return on investment.

I don’t think 750% is bad for a 2 month minimal effort. Now I have some more money to search for other domains.

what the hell do you do now? this sounds really intruiging. I like small stuff like this that you can do in your free time.

You're basically buying domains and sitting on them and when people want it they buy it from you? Do you incur any monthly fees for owning it or is it a one-time payment?

Wow $7 to $200, not bad, not bad

I found the domain in goDaddy auction and got it for $10 and then paid around $10 more to register it for a year, so around $20. Then I resold it.

The important thing is to look for domains that get traffic.

And you want to stay away from things like typos and possible trademarks. That could just get you a lawsuit.

Cybersquatting is one of the most loosely used terms related to domain name intellectual property law and is often incorrectly used to refer to the sale or purchase of generic domain names such as example.com; where a covetous party has designs on unseating an innocent entity that was first-to-register a generic and valuable domain name. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cybersquatting

Look, there are tons of domain names out there that anyone in the world can basically acquire. If you are not quick or smart enough to go and get your domain name on time, then you have to pay what the market determines. The cybersquatters didn't have any initial advantage over any other people tryin to register the names they "squat" on. Cyber squatting also usually refers to Trademarked names, already established identities, etc.

But how much time did it take you to find that domain and sell it time is money lets say you were paying your self the min wage which over in the UK is £3.60 GBP I would say as long as it didn't take more than 200-300 hours of your time to sell the it good if you lost on that your better getting a night job!

min wage in the UK is well over £5.00
search on wikipedia.org - minimum wage

and you don't spend too long trying to find a domain theres loads of great services out there to help you fine one,

and you buy domains these days as a hobby or a internet venture / business not to get rich, all the good .coms are taken, and the only way to make serious money through registering domains is through developing them, if you buy domains in the aftermarket then thats different, but if you want to make your money back and a profit with in a year you will still need to develop.

What i'm saying is buy a domain name and develop them, little money is to be made through sedo and reselling them

I'll advice anyone that before you purchase any domain from a secondary market as an investment to please do a research first, which is very easy.

You can go to www.archive.org, type in the domain URL and see what comes up. Archive.org keeps record of what each domain was used for, dating back as far as 1994, and if it was registered before then you can pretty much see what that domain was used for before you buy it, and if you do buy it, then once you know what the domain was used for in the past, then you can then negotiate the selling price.

in early 2000, I used to buy and sell domains, and i have sold a few domains, i think 5 or 6, average $8,000. Right now, i own about 40 domains but they are not for sale, not right now or never.

But i'm trying to buy this one domain and the owner wants $800 for it, i will eventually buy it, because I have already started building the site for that domain.

If you knew that the previous owner wanted it back, then i think you could have sold it for about $1,000. That's not a lot of money if the owner really wanted it back. But congrats for the sale.
