Online Magazine

I'm in the process of starting up my own online magazine. Is anyone familar with such a process or know of anyone who has tried this before? It's going to start off as a hobby, something I'm pasisonate about, but eventually I'm hoping to make some money of this idea.

I'm trying to calculate what all of the initial upfront costs would include. I have someone willing to design the site for me, free of charge. I have a group of people helping with the initial content that will be needed to launch the site. Any advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Perhaps someone is familar with...

Thanks!

So pretty much, you have no up front costs, you just need a domain name and a server. What will the online mag be covering? I know some very good skimboarding and surfing online mags. Skimboarder.com, foreverskim.com, happymag.com. It seems like you have a lot worked out. For the beginning issues, you can probably pull some free gear in exchange for advertising space from companies, depending on what you are covering in the mag. Then once you are established, you can start charging for ad space.

I'd suggest getting a content management system to better help ease the process, if not, you'll be spending a majority of your day editing and adding files via your FTP. And it being a online magazine, I suggest the content management system.

Me myself, I was going to begin an online magazine, I was going to use Joomla (free) and get the addon component called iJoomla Magazine... its like $70... but it gives you the actual feel of a magazine. Check it out at http://www.ijoomla.com --- best of luck

Other than hosting fees, and buying a domain. You have very little cost. You really just have to figure out who's working for you and at what value. you also need to figure out a good, and quick way to publish. Online magazines need a lot more photoshop work because you want it to be a magazine. I like the iJoomla too though.
