To be honest, the best way to attract traffic is to give them some content, some reason for them to want to come back to your site, anything else is just lots of opinions.
But, yeah a little bit of html wont hurt but it really just take about 10 minutes, the rest should be concentrated on not overdoing it.
In the end, the less you know, the better! Just make sure your site has some unique and top content then let Google find you, which they will.
Concentrate too much on making search engine friendly pages and it might backfire on you.
The main thing is, add some freshly written content every day or at least every week and you'll get your traffic.

Seo is a skill, just like any other profession, which requires many hours of dedication. What do you do if you want to become a top notch coder? You either go to school to acquire the knowledge or you cover yourself with books and try to learn it on your own. (I personally prefer the 2nd method, since I consider most schools as rip offs, they simply don't teach you the skills required to make $$.)

Just to give you guys heads up, you won't learn seo by taking classes or buying wso's. You can buy the entire warrior forum, you still won't learn anything. Simply because wso is designed to share with you the very basics, just enough to get you interestedt. That's all. Take my word for it, the reason I'm saying all this, is because I have many friends/colleagues who sell wsos just to make a buck. Are they skilled seo wizards, many of them are, but none of them is willing share the real secrets and take you by the hand and walk you through until you become successful seo guru.

I've been in seo business for quite some time. How I got into it? I opened a small business back in the days, and began looking for ways to promote it online. No way I was able to afford google adwords, which is designed to rip off the consumers anyway. I began doing my own research, spend tens of thousands of hours, reading, communicating and networking on forums with those in the business. Basically, I had used trial and error approach. Frankly, at this point I could honestly admit that I can put almost any niche on 1st page of google. It takes a lot more than submitting an article once a week, throwing a few blog and forum posts with backlinks to your site. Guys, take my word, don't buy into wsos, or anything else online that gives out promises to teach you seo. At the end of the day, you will not learn anything significant in order for you to be able to promote your own site or even, make $$ as seo consultant.

When I promote my sites, I break it into two parts:

onsite and offsite.

Onsite - strategically organized, niche oriented content. Friendly url structures, simple code. These are my blue prints.

Offsite- this is all about backlinks, bottom line, the more authority backlinks you have, the higher you'll rank.

Analyzing and studying your competition is the final part. I always ask myself a question. What makes the #1 site remain #1 among thousands of others competing for the same niche.

Buying backlinks is another useless approach in my opinion, because you simply don't know how long these backlinks will stick around. And when you buy them in bulk, you'll loose track of them, trust me on this.

Final note. Those of you that want to learn seo, dedicate yourself, this is no different than having a full time job as an analyst, coder, nurse or any other profession out there.

Bottom line, this is a highly competitive and difficult business. If you don't have a lot of time on your hands, you'll be better off hiring someone to promote your business.
