Hello Joey. So you have two things:
- A brain
- 2-3 kUSD
You are in the flower of the age, young and healthy (I suppose). Don't invest in crappy things, because you don't have a little brain (I'm sure). Canada is a country of opportunities, and you don't have to be conformist ("with a hot dog stand I will be happy my whole life").
I don't know your studies, but if you want an advice, surf on google and search marketing ebooks (pdf). Open your brain enough to acquire creativity and then move your body assisting to free entrepreneurial seminaries and conferences. Get contacts and start something brilliant, something that will allow you to feel satisfied in the future, and make you proud of yourself.
It's possible, because you WANT to do it, so you CAN do it.

You might be interested in...
If you are looking for a part time or full time business you can start with very little start-up cost (only about $650 for supplies), you should consider a business in Network Marketing. From what I've heard, it sounds like you would be great at this business and the income potential far exceeds that of a hot dog cart. Network Marketing allows you to leverage your time to make $5k, $10k, or $20k plus a month depending on how far you take it and you can do it anywhere in the world. If you are serious about starting a business and quiting your job, I highly suggest you take a look at Network Marketing opportunities. Email me at reillycarpenter@yahoo.com and I can send you more information on some opportunities I know of and there are some great articles on yourwealthadvice.com you should check out.
Take care,
-Reilly

Joey, hope this helps. I review business ideas on my blog - mainly unconventional business ideas, and most of these don't require a heavy startup capital. Feel free to look at the ideas and let me know if you have questions

I agree with the hotdog stand. New they are about4-5 grand but if you get a used one and make it look new again you will be able to get one in your budget. Just google your cities laws and look for the restrictions. You could also call up you health department and ask them, they should know since they oversee them.

Easy one with no capital
All great ideas, but you should look into outside sales. You can work as much or as little as you can, and it takes no startup capital. I have actually done quite well doing sales for a screen printer. I just go to clubs, fraternities, and sororities. After a while, business comes to you. I can set you up with the company if you are interested.

If you're good at selling, you may want to invest in the wellness industry with a company called Original Limu. You can start with one case for about $130 (plus tax & shipping). Each bottle retails for $50. It's actually a good product. I've been drinking it for about a month and have already noticed some improvements in my energy level, skin, etc.

Aside selling hot dogs, maybe your should add some like burgers or tacos. You can also make arrangement of orders for some clubs when they will holding up parties. Also, try selling at university / school canteen. Just make arrangements with the administration.

One good idea I've got is a hot dog cart. I've heard those guys can make $40k-60k a year in only 6 months in the summer but I live in Winnipeg, MB, Canada and summer's almost over here so I think I'll have to wait til next year.
Another idea I'm a little uncertain about is vending machines but I'm not sure I'll make enough. I think $2000 can get me about 20 quarter machines that could make me between $500 to $1000 a month with about 10-20 hours work.
Anyway if anyone has any business ideas it would be greatly appreciated.

A lot of hotdog and other street vendors tend to be owned by bigger businesses now and has become very saturated, why dont you try smoothie bar? Carful though becuase this may only be a 5 year fad dont over stay your welcome!
