Looking for first web design client

Hello everyone. I am interested in doing my first actual web design for someone other than myself. Don't let that be a turn off though. I have been experienced in web design for over 3 and a half years. I also have a good sense of what is good and what is not. I would be willing to charge a very low price IF ANY if you would be interested. However, I am not that experienced in outside work so please don't expect anything spectacular!

If the site turns out to be a good one, I would then charge a minimal fee.

Thanks. Sorry if this is in the wrong area.

Email me here if you are interested.

    Hi robertsefe,

Can you provide some links to some sites you designed? It may help people decide if your style matches their web site ideas.

Thats part of the catch. I havn't actually designed any outside sites. That, however does not mean i do not have web design skills. I would be willing to do a free design because of this.

I do realize that it would not be the smartest thing to have your site designed by someone that has no portfolio but if you don't like it, there is no harm done to you because I am not charging.

You should be your own first design client - build your web design businesses web site. That should be your frist mission. When you have that done - let us all know!

Agreed. Toss together a site to show off your work. It will be hard to convince people to let you design a site if you don't have anything to show them.

Thats a good idea. I have had designs in the past, but I never seemed to be able to settle on one that i thought would be worth "putting out there". I guess i will just have to put my mind to it and grind out a good one.

    Thanks for the help!

Eric, when it comes to designing, I have made some pretty simple but sleek designs. Would it be better for my site to be simple and sleek or busy and intricate?

Keep it simple & sleek Robert. About the worst thing you can do in designing an informational website (in this case your services) is making a site that takes away form your info. Don't be mistaken though, there are ways to design complex & intricate sites that work for your information rather than against it, but it seems that these sites are harder to come across.
I suggest that you build a simpler site for now to get yourself on the market, but after your place in the market is established you could begin to draw-up plans for a more complex site.

P.S.- I hope I was of some help...

Simplicity is usually best - it depends on your audience of course. If your audience is very computer literate, it may be ok to make the site more complex and have more information in harder to find places - but generally speaking, even internet gurus would like to get in, get their information, and get out.

I would suggest that you used your skills for doing something else other than web design, the market is saturated. I'm making alot off making websites for myself, but it took me the best part of a year to learn all I need to know for this business (I already knew webdesign and html).

If it's saturated, then why are you doing it?

If you want to get your portfolio off and started, go ahead and ask your friends if they want a personal website. Also, go ahead and network in business groups to get referrals. There are people out there that would like their websites redesigned by people who know what they're doing.
