Investment ideas? £10k to play with

I been thinking of something to put some money into on the side - like a side business opportunity of some sort.

I am already doing something on the side, outside my work hours but I don't need to put anything into it right now.

I've got like $10k to play around with.

I was thinking of dealing in some PS3's from abroad and knocking them off here in UK -

Any idea's? What I could invest in possibly? Or anyone offering anything?

    Cheers

Are PS3's very profitable items? On release day, the stores made next to nothing off the sales. Stores were basically distribution hubs, I think they still are, and make very little money on PS3's thats why you see little internet stores selling them for ~900$ USD WAYY to much.

Why do you think PS3's are cheaper abroad? The margin on ps3's are very small .

I wouldn't recommend stocks unless you've done two things:

    1. Due Diligence on a stock so that you've familiarized yourself with it
    2. Have some knowledge of the stock market

Investorpedia.com should get you started on learning the stock market itself. That is, if you really are interested in a high risk (but good possibility of getting a return. Stocks only go 2 ways... up or down, so its a 50/50 chance.)

If you don't know what to do with the money you need to learn about various forms of investment not come to a board asking for suggestions. What's that old saying " A fool and his money are soon parted"

sorry funk, I do not have an idea for you, just need to make a comment to some of the posters.

Young Spark.. the stock market is not 50/50.. unless you are throwing your money into a random stock.. then you could kind of call it 50/50. But with research it is definitely not 50/50.

and roadtoharvard.. he was asking for suggestions of what type of things to do with his money. He was not saying tell me what to put my money in and i will do it. MAYBE he has done some research and come up with a few good ideas, but is interested what others have to say and just MAYBE they will come up with a better idea than he has. That is the opposite of being a fool.

I would put the money into a CD account and not touch the money untill you ACTUALLY know what you want to do with the money and have a plan set up for it.

Stocks can do one of three things:go up, go down or stay the same. As for the rest, oye, where to start. You contradict yourself by saying that the stock market is not 50/50 then in the next sentence saying it is "kind of" 50/50. Which is it?

Maybe, Maybe, Maybe. Pure speculation on your part. If he had done investment research he would have outlined his choices and asked which one seemed to be the best course of action in accordance with his investment objectives. Instead he came here and said that he was considering "knocking off" ps3's and more specifically

Does that sound like someone who knows how to handle their investments? Sounds like a fool to me. Although it may seem that I'm being an asshole I'm not trying to be. I'm just trying to save the guy from getting slaughtered . There is no shame in being a fool since part of becoming an knowledable investor is acknowledging your limitations and seeking to overcome them via education and experience.

Very true I would be contradicting myself. But I think it is pretty safe to assume that you know exactly what I meant by that. You of course are not arguing that the stock market is NOT 50/50. But when I said that "if you are randomly picking a stock it is kind of 50/50" what I of course meant was that if is truely is random, then you don't know what kind of risk you are assuming and the stock market is not 50/50, but your choice could either be a hit or a miss (or stay equal). So I should have been more clear by what I meant, because saying 'kind of 50/50' is not exactly what I meant.. I was just being lazy and did not want to explain.

You're exactly right, it is pure speculation, and that is exactly what I was trying to point out. NO ONE but him really knows how much research he has done. He could have done none and not planned on doing any. Or he could have done a bit and came up with the PS3 idea, then gave up. Or he could have done none at all and hoped someone here would give him good enough advice.. I could go on with more of these but I think you get the point.
