The scarier, the better, I think.

Maybe a line of licensed musicians / band members / singers / celebrities.
Most would be pretty easy to throw together - emo wigs, black-white-red-pink makeup... short skirts, fake tattoos... just browse through rolling stone or the like.

If its for a business, stick to the costume staples like, vampires, superheroes and fatigues.
Along with that, offer some specials costumes like anything new and fancy in the media, Id be amused witha frayed undead Paris Hilton costume, complete with a zombie puppy.

Um, you are a little late. My halloween sales started back, in the last week of September.
So far, sexy schoolgirls, witches, and dracula's, seem to be the most popular custumes.

You may want to reconsider starting up a Halloween business this late in the season. If you were to start up a business now, then you might want to use sexy and celebrity costumes.

If it were me I would recommend getting into the christmas business now. If you are looking to run seasonal business you need to be set up well before the actual holiday. Good luck in whatever venture you have though.

looks scary and horrible. Maybe mask from movies like Pirates of the Caribbean, Jason vs Freddy, etc... They are popular though.

I work at Party City and the hit kids costumes this year are/were Optimus Prime from Transformers, Hannah Montana, and High School Musical. For the adults we have been selling a lot of pirate costumes both male and female.
So if you want to do it next year, I would look at what the hit movie/tv show is for the kids and see if any costumes will be made based on that. For the adults the women - the more sluttier the better - most of our costumes are slutty or 'risky' as some people say, short skirts, cleavage showing, etc. Those sell.
Another thing you need to remember though is to get costumes for the bigger sized people in America - make sure you have a 'plus size' section for both male and female. Also try to get as many costumes as you can for children in husky sizes as even the larges can be to small for some kids.
Most guys don't care about dressing up as much the lady's do - so don't try to make it an even amount of costumes for each gender - most guys like to just get a cape and a mask and be done with it - They don't want to dress up as batman.
