closeouts, overstocks, how to become a wholesaler?

    Hi
How do people become wholesalers? In particular well known branded clothes, do you write directly to the companies themselves? Or is there a certain way companies disspose of all their overstocks? It's really hard to find any information on this.
    thanks beth

becoming a wholesaler is very difficult because you are so dependant on the supplier. Creating your own products is the way to go, you don't have to worry if the supply will meet your customers' demands.

Many suppliers want a huge chunk of investment before they deal with anyone and that can be a risky thing.

always look for references when ordering. You can attend tradeshows and make relationships with the vendors, that is my best advice to you.

Tradeshows offer some vendors that are not selling to everyone and you can make a deal with them and you could be a very few crowd that can be a wholesaler for the products.

Wish you the best of luck!

Thanks for the advice, trouble is it's hard to find manufacturers who do small enough runs , i have been burnt by a bad factory in china producing really bad quality samples and i still had to pay for them. They promised big things but basically produced sub standard prodcuts.

    its volume

You cant really be a wholesaler if you are buying in small quantities. To be a real wholesaler you need to buy in huge volume and sell to diff people in smaller volumes. You can get a large warehouse for storing the products or rent a 3rd party stocking service's space.

To be a wholesaler just buy from a manufacturer and re-sell in bulk...Don't have enough money to do that? Can't be a wholesaler.

    Initial ideas:

Start by setting up a whole lot of buyers who will buy what you want to sell. Then once you have a whole lot of buyers, purchase the clothes from the manufacturers in bulk and pay for them there. Ask the manufacturers what they need in order to sell to you ie, what minimum volume they sell, etc.

    Possible bootstrapping methods:

Find buyers who will be interested in buying what you'll have (at the prices they're willing to pay). Once you have enough buyers, you could ask for money up front and then use that money to pay the manufacturer. Don't worry if their isn't much markup, as the volume increases, the manufacturing prices should drop (offcourse you want to stay afloat though).

An alternative might be to get some sort of proof from the buyers that they intend to purchase and then use that as barganing power to see if you can get it on credit.

Also, manufacturing outlets: You may be able to get some cheap stuff from there in small quantities and then sell them with little profit so as to generate volume. Once the volume is high enough, buy it in bulk at a reduced price. Maybe you could buy it in 'bulk' from the manufacturing outlets (ie, from the shop outlet). Try to get a discount from there and again, as the volume builds, switch to bulk buying afterwards.

    Lightbulb Becoming a wholesaler

If you are talking about the licenses, first you would need a license to own and/or opperate a business. This application would probably be obtained through the city. This will depend on the state you live in. I would look up city licenses on line for wholesale and owning and/or opperating a business. The next thing you would need is a wholesalers license, this can also be PURCHASED through the city, or online for a cheaper price.!!! BEWARE!!! There are plenty of scamers trying to make a buck. Sorry, no suggestions here. Once you have purchased a wholesalers license, you will receive a tax id number. This number is what allows you to purchase things at wholesale price. There are some companies online,( Are they reputable? Who knows?) that will allow an individual to purchase wholesale, however the price is jacked up a bit to the individual and there is usually a higher minimum purchasing price. Hope this answers any questions you had.
    Good Luck!

The best way to get into this is not to buy directly from the manufacturer as the prices tend to be too high to turn a decent profit. Drop shipping doesn't really cut it either as the profit margin is too small. You are better off buying brand name closeouts and overstocks.

I wholesale in a number of different areas so you are welcome to pm me if you have anything specific you want to find out about the mechanics of the business. Good luck
