    Buying Bulk from other Countries

It was December of last year I was on Vacation through out Mexico. I visited Mexico City, Guanajuato, Puerto Vallarta, Guadalajara and some other small towns and cities. I realized one thing. I noticed how much people were selling on the streets for so cheap! I was buying all sorts of neat things ranging from cheap gold chains worth 7 bucks a piece and leather hats. While I was on a tour bus a man came in selling leather hats. Of course I asked him how much he wanted for a hat which was leather, Had a well made Adidas logo on it. It zipped off at the top to make a visor. This is what struck me the most, The zipper part. The man reluctantly said 10 pesos, Which is about a little more than 1 dollar. Like $1.07. It seemed way to cheap, It was well crafted. Made of good grade leather. I then asked him how much he wanted for all of his hats and he looked at me kind of weird. He had about 15 hats on him at the time and said If I bought all of the hats he would sell them to me for $100 pesos which is about $10. That's how much landscapers make in one day believe it or not. I then proceeded to ask him where he bought the hats and gave me an address of a man who had boxes of these hats. Of course we left that same day but I plan on returning next year. Now, when I got home with my 15 hats I went on ebay and put 1 up for sale. Sold at a buy it now price of $7 not including shipping. I went to sell all of them and raised the price a little ultimately making about $135. This goes to show all the young people that you don't have to know much about importing/exporting. You can do Business while your on vacation! Also what caught my eye was all the cheap leather jackets they have for sale. I bought me a nice high quality leather jacket for $40! In Leon Guanajuato which is said to be the clothes and merchandise capital of Mexico. Those jackets can sell easy for about $130 on ebay.

Nice post. I am thinking about getting into importing/exporting products. I have two places where I have visited that I would like to buy products wholesale and sell them here in the States. One: coffee from Costa Rica. Two: art and jewelry from Africa.

If any of you have experience with importing/exporting, we should chat. I will be going to Africa this summer to find a business partner.

    Interesting.

Keep in mind that you would need to do quite a bit of volume to make it worth it...and with volume, comes customs charges, shipping, etc.

But it definitely sounds like a good deal from here.

I think consistency would be the big question though...can you continue to do this with changing markets, products, pricing, laws, etc...

    Drop shipping?

I am looking to move to Costa Rica in the next four months to develop business opportunities. If you were going to continue to use ebay as your sales platform why not work with someone like myself to drop ship the individual orders directy from overseas. I don't know the import duties from Mexico to Costa rica, but I am sure they are much cheaper that mexico to the U.S Maybe we ship the products bulk to CR and then drop ship them to your end users in the U.S.. CR has cheap labor, and shipping is not that expensive in samll packages. That way you will by-pass bulk customs.. I would be interested in doing something like that.

Keep in mind I haven't contacted the supplier in Mexico. I think I'm going back this summer to visit my family.

That's the thing. You can't just cross the border to buy thing, you need to have connections in foreign countries, and the problems tend to begin there.

You see problems I see opportunity

Yes there are always problems with every business idea. The whole idea of entrepreneurism is to research and find ways around the problems and make your opportunity profitable.. I liked your idea about buying and selling on ebay, and I think that there is something there. I am not sure what but there is an opportunity. You could develop a base of people below you to sell the items and I could drop ship them direct. Again I'm not sure how it would all fall together but there is something there.
