the widescale voip phones everyone keeps talking about are still quite a ways off, although some companies are making inroads. The problem is that even IPv6 is not capable of providing enough range for global communications and it has to be something that can allow a standard.

In any case, the Brit phones are close enough to what I was talking about, we just don't have them here in the US much. Why, I have no idea. Virgin should bring them here, but they haven't. *shrug*. Was just an idea =)

I havent really looked into the British "answer" to the question since they are not available here.

I'm guessing that the primary reason that the britsh technology is not here is due to the distributed population in US cities vs. the typical close construction/ population in British towns.

Also, in order to "broadcast" a clean signal would require the phone base station to be much larger than it currently is and a large antenna would need to be fixed to the exterior of the home.

Needless to say, with the infrastructure that is currently inplace, and constantly being improved in the US, Cellular is currently the only thing that makes sense.

By the way, the Mobile PC based VOIP solutions that I was speaking of can be made via Cellular, or WiFi connection.

Personalized ring tones should be available in home phones. And the home phone base thing should have a hard drive capable of storing an inconcievable amount of ringtones.
