If you are a motivated individual with the know-how then a company vs a franchise is often better. However, do not discount the value of the systems, procedures, marketing etc that a franchise can bring.

I don't know how clever you are, but franchises are usually safer. (Emphasis on "usually.")

Franchise - Coffees, Smoothies & Hawaiian Products - Maui Wowi

According to my old economics teacher, back in 2007 the approximate cost to franchise Starbucks (with all supplies and everything included) was $1 million. Just food for thought

You can go for the gold and start your own shop as long as you have:

1) An amazing name
2) Some sort of product differentiation
3) A very good location

If not, check out Smoothie King as a franchise. Not bad advice for my first post. Zing!

I am curious, why a smoothie company? You said you are in your second year of college? What is your major? All decisions should be made with your end goals in mind!

Whether you decide to go with a franchise or start your own company, most companies fail because of lack of knowlegde. When I started my company as a soph in college I was lucky to have guys that had already gone before me. I used their advice to make it on my own. In fact one of those guys just retired his wife at 24 yrs old. Good luck with your decisions owning your own compnay it is the only way to go, it can be a great thing!

If you want to start a franchise business, take the time to find the franchise opportunity that is right for you. Would-be franchisees should start by asking at least two competing franchisers for their offering circulars, which they're obligated to give interested parties.

Comes down to the Individual

As a current Franchisor of a Smoothie Company this is right up my ally. I'd say it comes down to the operator. Going with a Franchise gives you, a tried and true system (that is easy to replicate, anywhere), marketing support/design/branding, operations support, recipe creation, more than likely cheaper start-up costs. Doing it yourself, you will learn more about all the inner workings and details of what goes into making it work. At the end of the day it comes down to the individuals goals and what they are comfortable with, but there are MANY very successful franchisees out there.
