    Should I email a startup before writing about them?

    I write about startups on my blog (see sig).

    Is it a good idea to email a startup - especially a small startup - before I post about it on my blog? In case I get some facts wrong, perhaps the founders can point it out, or add comments, etc. to the blog post?

    If not, then should I email the startup after I've written about it? It would make sense to let a small, new startup know if it has received press attention, even though my site is very new and doesn't have much clout (as yet).

    What is the standard industry practice? It'll be great if someone can point it out...

    I would say it's better to clarify your facts and make sure your information is actually factual as you don't want startups hassling you when you post incorrect information about their business and concept. It only takes one individual to tarnish all that good reputation you put effort into it. Don't risk it and just clarify and confirm your info matches theirs

    Try Doing both techniques. If I was going to be written on a blog, especially a high traffic blog I would like to be notified at first. This will give the owner/ start-up ample amount of time to get to know your blog by visiting your site and determine what may be right for them. Don't get me wrong do not let the prospective person/store/start-up dictate what you should right about, yet it will allow you to ask specific questions in order to amplify your article potential. When done, just shoot them am email and they can verify everything is right, and provide maybe some assurance for you the author.

    Startups love press! Why not contact them before you publish your article so you can get more insider info from them? There's also the benefit that you'll be engaging some really smart people who may help you connect with other smart people down the road.
