I wanted to start a Creative Marketing Company with my good friend that I have worked with on other companies before with. Problem is the last/first time I went in with the deal of Co-Ownership things got very messy. I'm an artist and I do many different things, so my time was spent mostly on the business but also working on movie sets, or in galleries for myself. We both agreed I should be Art Director, since the type of company didn't have my full passion as my partner was putting into it. A brief background of the disagreements we had were things like "killing ourselves" to get a job done. This company was a painting company, and I didn't agree with driving 20+ hours to a job over 600 miles away, and I also had problems with putting the business at #1 above health, family, and sanity.
Thing is I really want to startup a Creative Marketing company, I have lots of ideas and have created a very detailed and extensive brand for it already. What keeps seeping into my head though is future conflict of self philosophies. My own belief is to live life with balance, yes there is a lot of responsibility for owning a business but at the same time I have a place where I draw the line. When that business starts to destroy relationships, health, and sanity then it's not responsibility or "ownership" to me anymore but irrational possession. I want to be able to still do side things like sell paintings, work as art director of movies, etc. but I feel if I go in as an owner all of those things will be held against me with my co-owner.
Feedback? Should I stay as Creative Director? Founder? Or simply talk about my concerns up front and get something in writing?
