Promotion tips for an online startup?

I have just set up an online startup called Backslap Music Search Engine. (bkslap.com if you are interested) I'm just wondering if anyone has any tips for promoting online start-ups cost effectively?

I have done it since 1998 but it all depends on what niche are you. For music business, I would recommend Facebook for example.

The first thing you need to do is figure out who your target market is. Nail down the exact customer segments that you'll be targeting. Once you've nailed this down you can find the right marketing channels for those specific customers.

The forum won't let me post a link, but if you search for "Product/market fit" on Google, you'll find lots of great tutorials on how to figure out exactly who your target customer is.

Facebook page, Twitter page, get your major social networking presence started. It's not going to be a huge boom overnight in followers, but you have to start somewhere.

In this rare case, seeing that you're music related, I would also recommend myspace. Myspace always what the place for musicians and bands to start, and it seems to have fallen back into that niche once again now that facebook is king.
