How to hire a great group of employees/Where to find like minded individuals

We are a small internet service, internet access and telecommunications company in the Chicagoland area and have been in business for several years, but have not employed more than 4 people at a time as of yet. The main problem has been finding dedicated employees who share the same mindset as myself and our current staff. What I really need is younger people (we are a young company and it is easier to keep all the ages somewhat similar) that have great ambition, drive, and vision. Going with the hire 'complementary people' theory, what we really need (as these are the areas we are currently lacking) is sales, marketing, and graphics design. I realize that it may be hard to find salespeople out of college, due to most salespeople ending up in sales after doing several years of something else; but it seems that is shouldn't be too difficult to find people in the marketing and graphics design professions that meet our criteria. One recommendation I believe I read in Entrepreneur magazine itself is to put job postings on startup sites, but I am not familiar with any sites of this nature. I wish I knew of some local entrepreneur networking or social groups as well, as I think that would help in the area of hiring as well as general business development.

Do any of you all have any recommendations as to how to go about doing this? Any advice or discussion on the matter would be most helpful!

    Thanks!
    -Eric

We have used craigslist in the past to search for salespeople, but it is extremely difficult as the applicants we get always expect a huge support team. We are a small company and everyone wears multiple hats and needs to be somewhat self sufficient; thus why we are looking for people with a startup mindset.

With the present limits on data that a preceding boss is permitted to reveal, it is significant to pay vigilance to all the minutia the nominee devotes you. It will make the distinction between having a GREAT worker employed for you, and just having a good one

I agree you should try freelancers, they are individual entrepreneurs. You can hire employees from Odesk and Freelancer you have also a chance to interview them so that you will be sure that you are hiring the right person.

I think the Craigslist idea is the best one. You have to make sure you are perfectly clear about what you are looking for. Be honest about the environment they will be working in. Don't sugar coat it or paint a professional picture. Be brutally honest about the kind of personality you want as well as what benefits are in it for them if they take the job. You will get far less responses, but the few responses you do get will be much more likely what you are looking for.

When the ideal person reads that ad, they will think - Heck yeah. That 's for me.

Referrals from friends, advisers and industry colleagues are often the most efficient way to find new employees.

This may be efficient but not effective. One of the most common mistake employers commit is that they hire people locally and not being able to work with talented and skillful people found in other countries. Not to mention the savings the company will make on the payroll. Don't just limit yourself with monster.com , the internet offers a wide horizon for you to choose who, where and what type of skills you need.

    Cheers for the future!
