Effective but seldomly used management technique

A very successful yet relatively unused management technique that was recently incorporated by Harley Davidson was that the CEO relinquished his stranglehold on management in a sense by letting them be their own bosses. Should CEOs have a relatively hands-off approach just focusing on making sure a specific mentality is followed throughout the company or should they micromanage the business through every level?

This is called "empowering the people" or "Employee empowerment". it is actually widely used, and becoming increasingly popular.

This is something that I practice diligently and work on improving on a daily basis. There is one key thing to remember here. It is nto just about giving your employees the opportunity to make decisions for themselves. You have to align your strategy and vision, make it very clear, then COMMUNICATE IT to your whole company. Right from upper management to the board to the secretaries etc. everyone has to be on the same page. Then you trust that every employee will make decisions in line with corporate strategy.

I am actually working on a book about this topic. It is a big part of my life, and how I operate as a business professional.

Thanks for the post Chanson. I really appreciate your input on the topic. I know that it may not work in every situation or business, but I'm glad to know that it's being more widely used.
