There can be many meanings but these are some high level overviews.

1. Application Archiving - Maintaining data/versions of historic applications.
2. Application Retirement - Replacing or retiring an application with another.
3. Data Archiving - Storing/Indexing old data
4. Data Masking - Replacing data real data with false/fake data
5. Data Security - Securing Data - One way is to create data in encripted numbers that can be only be converted back to usable data with the correct software/pasword.
6. Database Cloning - Replicating/Backing Up data for recovery or testing.
