    Low production

    Hi!

I have just joined my father's business after my graduation. He had started this spinning factory 7-8 years back. But ever since he has been incuring loses only. He has changed around the entire staff several time but to no avail.

The biggest problem we have is that our production is very low. Now, my plan is to get on the production floor and track down everything that is going on. I am hoping that this would give us a clear picture of what is the actual reason for the low production.

Does this sound like a good idea? Any suggestions? I'll appreciate any help.

    Regards

that is a great idea but all I can say is be careful not to be too much of a micro manager... You should also evaluate the working conditions for the staff... Maybe have a sitdown with them individuals and get there suggestions directly as to what they think could help increase production. But the key is to do this privately so that they may feel comfortable with sharing their ideas..

You would be amazed as to what your employees can help you with sometimes...

    Good luck..

Mainly look into problems that may exist in the managerial level. If the Managers are nice they will automatically be able to manage the workers.

Also don't miss to see if there are any infrastructural problems.

I would actually like to "second" the motion put forth by aalmirall...sometimes the best answers are going to come from the people working right at the "ground floor."

If you can take 500 suggestions and find the common element that seems to come up with visible frequency, you have found your low-hanging fruit.

The second stage will be to actively boost morale.....this may cost you some out-of-pocket, but will be worth it. One company that I consulted would buy everyone pizza for lunch once a month. This may not even be feasible in your case, but it's just one seemingly silly-yet-effective morale booster.

Track down everything that is going on with the production, but don't micro-manage. This data is what you will use to make further decisions in the future...not hasty ones. Even the things that don't make ANY sense are happening for a reason Find out what that reason is!!

Tell us more about what's happening with your direct competitors. Is everyone seeing a slump? What are the conditions of your workers? What are the standard shifts worked? Are you in production on the weekends? Do you take time off?
