I would say you can get a good deal from someone around here but... be aware that if you want a dating site that kind of site requires a TON of programming and scripts which takes many hours of time. Just know the prices you may be given are higher than a standard website that does not require so much PHP and other heavy coding.

It depends on the function of the site,
Do you need database?
is it a static website(content that stay the same)
Many questions that they'll ask you..
generally, you're looking at $150 for a basic one and ranging to 1000s if it more complicated.

i would quote you around $250,
built in mail system,
profiles,
and a couple more features..
depending on what other features you would require my estimated time for project about 1 week.
Please contact me via pm,
Thank you.

$250 for all of that? Wow, that's pretty good. I was expecting someone to quote at least $600.

Yeah, that sounds like it could be a template. If custom sites like that only cost $250 to build wouldn't everybody be putting up sites like Myspace?

$250? I wouldn't create a static 5 page site for that much let alone a huge multifunction social networking site and probably wouldn't trust someone who would. You need to write up a business plan and sit down with a systems analyst before trying to figure out the cost of the site. You will need to identify all of the functionality in order to let a developer estimate the time it is going to take to create it.
The project I am working on right now is a 10 page static information site (design & development) for a banquet hall. The entire site is going to be written in xhtml, css, and one php function for a contact form. I am charging $850.00 for this and I got the job because I was the lowest bid. Generally in web design and development you will find that the old adage is true that you get what you pay for. And if you want a high quality social networking (dating) site that allows users to post public profiles, take compatibility tests, send messages, upload pictures, and have an administrative back end that you can easily control settings and moderate forums and such you are looking to pay in the thousands.
This is my opinion of course and I am sure it won't be agreed with fully but in my experience it is true.

I agree with you. I've worked with many designers and developers and have never heard of a designer that would develop a good custom site for $250.
