Do you do multiple samples to choose from, and do you offer revisions?

You know I did not think of this.

I do not offer multiple samples however do offer revisions.

If you would like multiple samples I will charge the following for each additional

    I will on the following....
    Logos and Banners $2
    HTML Web Design $10
Cre Loaded $35 per each additional design

I really need some funding so I may make some exceptions.

Please contact me! Thank You for your time.

Why in the world are you doing this so cheap?

    1) Im 18 and do not need to pay taxes etc I live at home
    2) I do not have a really big portfolio yet
    3) I want to build my portfolio.
    4) I am not fluent with CSS

several other factors as well. All im concerned about is making some money to launch my business.

Website Design 5 Page Layout $40 add a logo or banner for $5!
Even if your price point is 10x that, you will still get business. I understand wanting to build a portfolio, but geez...

$400 for a website or $50 for a logo is still beyond dirt cheap, and you're doing 10x less work for the same pay.

I remember when I used to offer logo design/web design for cheap. And you know what I got? Experience, but I also got a bunch of deadbeat clients who did not appreciate my talent and services. I would do a graphic design internship to get the experience and skip the hassle of trying to get your 10 dollars and people still stiffing you for money.

TRUST me on this one. It pays to raise your rates or take another route to get experience/portfolio.

If the business you want to start is web development, then build your portfolio by doing sites for local non-profits, in exchange for a link from their site.

You'd be getting a good jump on ranking your business website, since non-profits can often develop a lot of link authority

Then, get a job that will pay all your expenses if you do not have any design work. And here's the most important part - set a mid-range price point for your skill level, and turn down work that doesn't meet your price. Just turn it down. You'll have the job so you won't need their money.

If you don't do this, you will get stuck in the bargain basement web design category - the guys who price on how long it takes them on some Dreamweaver template, not on the value of the product. Plus your portfolio gets diluted with a bunch of mediocre sites when you could've just waited on the higher paying jobs that allow you to deliver a better product.

I am not starting a web design company because I was told my work is worthless. However what you are describing it does not sound like just me. I was doing logos and designs for cheaper and got stiffed almost everytime thinking it was my work.

I wanted to start a small firm, should I go for it?

I have access to domains at $5each and am a reseller but never got into it. I guess maybe I should!

    Dalex,
You definitely have promise in your designs. Remember that your service is worth what it is believed to be worth. I would like to take you up on your services. I am in need of a logo that does not appear to be a mirror image of every other financial service company we see online. I have tried working with big wig companies and never have the direct level of communication and am always told what I want.
I know the purpose of a logo is to catch the eye and stay in the mind. Like the FedEx arrow. Well anyway. I seam to be partial to ovals and arches. I don't know why, but those always call to me. I will pay you via PayPal if you do choose to design a logo for my company. I enjoy the logo Sub-Zero uses. They are an appliance company. A quick google for "sub-zero logo" If we could incorporate a subtle 3 in the logo that would be great as I work with all three credit bureaus at once. Maybe 3 escalating lines showing improvement.
Wow that was a lot of words to say I want to hire you. If you would like to talk on the phone send me a PM and I will give you my direct line.

If you do want to start a web design company, and assuming that you have a design eye, here is what I would do:

    1) Learn the basics of Photoshop

    2) Buy a really huge, really good Photoshop book

    3) Download every layer style, button set, icon set, vector set, text effect, free 3rd party plugin, and brush set you can find.

    4) Learn about layers, shadows and gradients, transparency, blending layers and textures, etc.

That is a lot of work, but it will take you from being a "template" web designer to being one of the custom solution guys that gets a lot of money for designs.

A guy I used to use is a good example - pixelcriminals.com - this guy is phenomenal, but 99% of what he does is all in those basic things I just described. He just has 'the eye'.

If you don't have it, you can still start a company, but you will need to partner with a good designer if you want to get anywhere. There is certainly a market for really cheap template based sites, and you can carve a niche there, but if you're going to do it, why not do it big?

LukerFinancial.... Look for my private message!

Some more info about me. I am a certified CIW Professional and have been doing web design for over 4-5 years. I have take a 2 year Tech School Web Design class in High School and graduated half a year early due to my skills surpassing the teacher. I also have won a couple of awards durring the time of the Tech School.

My teacher knew I had an eye for design and wanted me to represent the class 2 years in a row at Skills USA. For Skills USA Regionals I won First Place and for Skills USA State Championships I won 3rd Place.

    1) Learn the basics of Photoshop ......... Done... need to update my skills

    2) Buy a really huge, really good Photoshop book... Done but it is CS2

    3) Download every layer style, button set, icon set, vector set, text effect, free 3rd party plugin, and brush set you can find. "Never Done"

    4) Learn about layers, shadows and gradients, transparency, blending layers and textures, etc. Done

I also have the whole Adobe CS3 Suite as well as Swish and other Animation programs.

Then from now on, do all your web design in Photoshop, and splice it.

It is better to do it this way and convert to CSS? I can do that and have done that. I was just told on another forum that it is useless and should do it the way I am now. lol
