    Website valuation

    Hi all,

Can I ask how one would go about valuing their website, before considering a sale?

    Thanks

On auction sites such as sitepoint/flipps/digital point forums the usual guideline people follow is 6-12x monthly sales.

6-12x isn't really an effective method and many other things should be taken into consideration...what would you prefer to buy...
Both sites have 12,000 per month in revenue (so your valuation using simple multipliers would be about $144,000), but site a) has a net profit of $2000 per month, site b) has a net profit of $10000 per month
Are they still both worth $144,000?

    HI,

When discussing website valuations there are a two distinctly different thought processes as far as I am concerned, namely whether you are looking to buy a site or looking to sell a site. For me these have two completely different criteria and today I am continuing the developing online posts that I have done previously and will explain how I come to a rough valuation in my head when I am looking to purchase a website. It’s handy to have a rough upper limit when negotiating a price.

    Thank you.

As with any valuation, you need to look at intellectual property.

How much would it cost to replicate the idea? How unique and protected is the site?
What is the site's turnover and profit?

I'd generally aim to get 3-5x turnover, plus the value of any code, designs or domains.

I second what Calumbrannan but I go with a 2-3x.

I go with 3x the monthly sales plus the amount of traffic, Google page rank and Alexa rating. All of which you can tack on some more $$$.
