Ok, pardon the noob question but:

when you register a website, you effectively lease it for a year or whatever timeframe you buy. When you sell a domain, how do you transfer that domain to the new owner? How exactly does selling a domain work - can you end the lease early?

When you register a domain name... it's YOURS -- you're not leasing it at all. You are the owner, and will continue to be if you keep renewing it.

Transferring a domain name to a new owner can be done via the control panel of your domain registrar. Login to your account and find it there. I could probably give you more details if I know who your domain registrar is.

That depends on the domain registrar. Most of the registrars that I use require a transfer key. The owner of the domain must pass you the transfer key then you can take over from there.

ICANN allow you exclusive rights to the domain, for whatever timeframe you purchase. But ICANN could take your domain, whenever or wherever they wish.

They are resellers for GD. Which, by the way, will probably be a good fit for you if you're interested in domaining.(although there are other good reseller progs. out there) Great buy rates with GD/WWD reseller...but, beware you're in DIRECT competition with the grandest monster in that market.

You can end the term early but there isn't much point in doing that. If you purchase a keyword rich domain name, you could sell it after it was live but this also helps if it has traffic and revenue.

It's the logistics of selling that I'm thinking about. lets say someone wants to buy one of my domains....say forextradingfree.com for $100 and I agree.

What do they need to do? what information do I need? Is there any cost involved in me transfering the domain to the new owner?

have them paypal you the domain, have that person sign up where the domain is registered lets say namealerts.com, grab his username there, go into your domain, find push or extend domain, put his name in for the .com and hit push, it will automatically transfer into his account.

If you transfer in the same company such as
you (namecheap.com) transfer to client at (namecheap.com) it will be free, if you push outside your register there will be a $15.00 fee usually.
