Depends on the site... I'm going to guesstimate that 95% of them are a bad idea. I've purchased a handful and only had success with one.

There are two answers to your question...

1] Is it bad to buy a turnkey website or any site for that matter off eBay in regards to buying from eBay... The answer is no in turns of buying off eBay (of course do your due diligence on the seller as with all transactions done on eBay).

    and second...

2] Is it a good idea buy a turnkey website... Depends on what you define as turnkey. The term turnkey is a bunch of bullshit. Any dipshit dumb enough to use the term mostly have a crap site (my bias opinion; I hate people who drop key terms thinking it means something when in reality it means shit) but bias opinions aside, as rogercbryan says, it really depends on the site. Some sites are genuinely good buys and most are just pure shit (excuse all my language offenses).

You'll have to do extensive (and I do mean EXTENSIVE) research on the site and make your best judgement call whether or not it actually is going to produce the results you want (keep in mind that I expect that anyone who is buying a website should expect to put in effort to further develop the site).

The seller is selling because obviously in some way shape or form its not performing as well as they'd like or requires further work to produce more income and that's where you come in. Don't expect to buy it and do nothing and hope that it produces magically amounts of revenue for you (this is seldom true and if it was, there'd be no reason for the seller to sell in the first place).

It depends highly on YOU whether or not the site is a business model you want to work on, is interested in, or even understand. Look at it with realistic expectations and do your background check on the site before deciding.
