Is Google that important for my business to be successful online? I only read articles about how online businesses depend so much on Google for their own sake. I wonder if there’s a way to avoid this search Engine and still be successful.

Why would you ignore a place where your potential customers are looking for your products and services right now??
The short answer is yes. You need Google. Let me elaborate: The most reliable way to get customers to your site is through organic Search Engine Optimization. However, SEO relies on search engines, and right now the search engine of choice for most online users is Google. That being said, you should never put all your eggs in one basket. So do other things to attract customers to your website, such as writing articles, e-mail marketing, ezine advertising and offline advertising in niche publications.

SEO is the best ROI out there.
One of our clients is getting almost as much business from Google now as they are from all their local advertising, including TV, radio, print, and billboards. However, they pay us $500/mo compared to ... who knows how much ... for everything else.
.
Google isn't as dumb as you think.
Trying to succeed in an internet business without even a small focus on SEO and google is a waste. So to answer the question, yes you need google.
Definitely. You need people to find you through Google, other adverts don't even target nearly as many people as Google

I am confused as to why you would not want to use Google???
They have many valuable resources:
analytics
adwords
adsense
That is just a few.
Got car or truck parts laying around? Turn them into cash.
www.modvenue.com
Free auto parts classifieds.
It depends what your business will be? Are you innovative or want to use current resources.
If you can find more customers using facebook for example why the hell you want to use Google?
Google have only aggregated the knowledge of Internet technologies but life is far beoynd that.
And getting stuck with Google your most likely income will be Google Adsense checks.
I think, At present, the search engineer is neccessory. many people who frequently use internet cannot leave search engineers. But I don't know if there is some change in 10 years, maybe a new model comes out in future
