    Exclamation what should come first?

    hows it going everyone!
I had a question that I just could not figure out
    and that is
Should I go forth to find and obtain a retail space first then go on to finding and contacting the clothing companies I want to carry in my store, or should it be the other way around?
Any input or advice would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks everyone!

Zigs... great question. Golden rule: don't commit to retail space (or any other hard cost) until you have your broad business plan totally figured out. The last thing you'd want to happen would be to be stuck in a lease with nothing to sell!

Your business plan should tell you things like how much inventory you'll need to carry at any time, which will give you a good idea of how much space you'll need. Contacting the companies first will give you an idea of how much time it takes to get your order in, so you'll know exactly when you'll need your space. Be sure to allow time for a soft opening, too, to work out any kinks.

    Good luck!

    Hi Zigs,

Anonymousadguy is right. It is better if you contact your apparel suppliers first. The store is normally dependent on the brands that you will carry and your target market. There are suppliers, especially the branded one, are very particular about the venue. Finding the right store location is easier when you have finalized your products.

    Goodluck to you

The two people that responded above are absolutely right. It is much better to already have the clothing lines you want in your store lined up and on board before you buy a retail space. From your question it seems as though you have not made any deals with any clothing lines and are still looking. It would be a terrible shame and inefficient if you had to pay rent on your store when you aren't even selling anything in there yet. And there is always the chance that everything goes wrong and your business doesn't lift off and you will be stuck with a lease that you have to pay
But best of luck to you and your venture and I hope everything goes smoothly
