    researching patents and technology

I have a few ideas for businesses centered around the development of devices that, as far as I know, do not exist.

I am not sure how I go about searching patents in depth and determining if similar devices already exist that do not have patents.

There are a couple first steps you could take:
    1) Search the internet for similiar devices or technology
    2) Search the patent website at uspto.gov

However, unless you are an expert in patent law and familiar with evaluating patent claims, you won't be able to make a final determination. You will need to seek professional assistance. But start with the first two steps.

There is lot of info on net.
Try Patent Analytics and Patent Searching and search on the appropriate words.
There is no 'need for patent' if you are not afraid that some one else may use your idea/technology.

    All the best
