Question regarding Adsense

I’m new to the online money making idea (I know, I know I’m about 8 years too late). Anyway I have a question about AdSense and similar ad programs like that. If I sign up and have them advertise on my site, I get paid every time someone clicks on the ads if I set up a CPC (cost-per-click), right? If that’s the case what would keep me from getting my buddies to go on my site on a regular basis and click on ads just to show that the ads on my site are getting hits, in turn making me money? I’m sure I’m missing something, right? Will somebody please explain it to me?

If I’m totally wrong then how does this really work? How do I really make money off my site?

Yep, if you signup for a PPC system like Google ads, each time someone clicks on the ad on your site, you get paid an amount (depending on the keyword and how much the advertiser is paying etc).

Yes, your mates can go to the site and click on the ads every day, but usually the amounts paid per click are pretty small. Google though does monitor for bots (which are clicking the ads numerous times) which you or someone may be running. If they pick it up they'll immediately cancel your account.
