need a business to write a receipt?

Do you have to have a business to legally write out a receipt?
I am in a predicament and will not be payed for my services unless i have a reciept to send the company.
Can I write out the receipt without actually having a business name legally or do i have to go make a business?

Your name can be your business...
Make one up (receipt that is).

If you are charging for products/services rendered - you should be able to come up with a receipt pretty easy - and not need legal intervention. Make sure you do the right thing when tax time rolls around... as whoever you are charging my apply your reciept to their expenses...

Just so you know, you can get receipt books at OfficeMax. You can use it to write up the costs, total, sales tax, date, etc...

It would look better than if you just wrote up some b/s on a piece of notebook paper.

If you are billing for labor - and being paid for your time - it's income.
So...you do have to report it - unless it's under a certain amount (if I remember correctly - exemption is capped at like $600 per tax year?)

If you didn't charge more than that minimum and you aren't going to be doing any other service-type jobs (that you charge for) - I'm pretty sure you don't have to claim it.

But if you do have other income coming in with regards to the same type of service - and you will exceed that min - you do have to claim it (and pay out the self-employment percentage) - because that company (and any others you bill) will be claiming your fees as an expense against their income.

Bottomline: It's best to check with your accountant... or are there others here who can confirm/refute what I'm saying? I'm no expert...

I believe that $600 minimum is correct, i am not sure either, but I constantly read and hear about the $600 minimum. I am sure not going to make $600 from this type of business this year. I do make over $600 from another business which is completely seperate in the work and services. I do not have an accountant, im not even really a business, I just needed to get paid for my services with out breaking laws.

    ...no cops - no stops...
It's all legal until you get caught.

If this isn't your primary business - nor something you are aspiring to make a major source of income - then I wouldn't worry about it. Good luck...

ps- you should consider an overall consult with an accountant - or at least an accounting ref book, etc... just my opinion.
