Info on starting a bookkeeping business

Does anyone have any info on starting a bookkeeping business? I want to provide a remote service to small/mid size companies that includes all record keeping. I have my degree in Finance and have been an accountant for a number of years, but I want to start my own company at home. Any information would be a HUGE help!

If you have the motivation to start your own business than do it. I am 25 and have had my own accounting business for 1.5 years now. My advice would be to join local networking groups, and get out there and meet small business owners. Let me know if you have any questions!

I personally think book keeping is a great business, although I myself am a web business owner.

Mainly because there's little out of date technology involved and at 5 PM you are done and there are no clients hammering at your door because they can't figure out your product. (Ex software industry, website industry)

Just ensure your marketing strategy will work. I'd recommend google adwords, targeted to your area.

I wouldn't limit myself to winning one small business at a time. They may not provide sufficient income soon enough. You may need a marketing investment from a family member or loan on the order of 5000... to cover marketing only. Otherwise it could take a year before you accumilate enough clients.
use only yellow pages, classified ads, cost per click or cost per action marketing. Any outrageously priced ads are only for big businesses that are trying to brand themselves where as you need customers, not branding. DO NOT BELIEVE ANYONE WHO SELLS YOU ADS. THEY ARE LIARS.

Maybe talk to some mid-sized, private firms and see if you can create a small business department since once a firm gets bigger they move on from those businesses often.

Also, if you can find a friend who's parents run a law firm or is involved try to create a relationship where you offer accounting to their clients.

Be careful tho because those deals with law firms or big accounting firms can take a long time to complete, sometimes a year. That's why its better if you know the owner because ultimately bigger businesses have better things to do than sign anything at all with anyone unless it is a critical vendor to their operations.

I learned that the hard way.

Hello everyone, I have a question about starting a bookkeeping company.
I'm based in Howick South Africa and I do Bookkeeping for companies in Pietermaritzburg, Howick, Nottingham Road and the Midlands area. How do I go about finding out what Fees I should charge???

Any advice would be greatly appreciated
