I think if you really want to get into business, be an entrpreneur and run a business, then you will. Otherwise, you can always find something else which interests you.

Being in business or being an entrepreneur is about taking risks and confronting challenges, and I guess you will learn as you go along, but confidence is a must in being/becoming an entrepreneur.

    go into i-banking

No..seriously. The sot of advice you might get when asking "How to be an entreprenur" is mostly going to be useless. It's not that the people giving the advice are silly, or mean harm, it's a lot simpler than that.

Asking "How to be an entrepreneur" is the same as asking "How to be an artist". In these cases you should never ask the artist!

Anyway, the point is this: Entreprenurship, as an occupation, has gone far beyond from being just a loose collection of rules of thumb like "You have to be persistant", "You have to be unique", "You need to be a team player"- or any of the other 100 or so rules of thumb that people will volunteer to you with best intentions.

Over the past 50 years, thanks to countless careers and millions of dollars- entrepreneurship has becomme a specialised discipline that you'd learn at Business School. Learning to be a good entrepreneur is about as complex as learning how to be a good lawyer or a doctor. It doesn't come naturally.

So yeah....my friend, you wanna learn how to be an entrepreneur? Go to Harvard or Babson. Trying to distill 5 years of curriculum into a 100 word internet post is going to be a dis-service to you from my perspective.

    Good Luck!

I couldn't disagree with you more. This is an instance where it depends almost solely on the individual (reference my first post in these forums) and what is the right fit for them. There are countless successful entrepreneurs who would have never achieved even a fraction of their success if they had gone and/or stayed in college.......and there are countless successful entrepreneurs who would never have achieved what they have if they had not gone to college.

Just as a side note, Babson has a lot of growing problems underneath their "#1 entrepreneur college" veneer. I don't go there but have friends who do, and in some cases it isn't nearly as pretty a picture as everyone seems to believe. There are people who are wrapping up a 4 year education there who are completely detached from the reality (read: brutality) of the business world. Not to say that there isn't a shortage of capable students........it's just that the volume of less-than-acquainted-with-reality students seems to have been building up some serious steam of the past few years, and it came as a real surprise to me.

    No its not a requirement.
Its the effort you put in that does it. Im sure there are many lazy, uninspiring MBA people getting around.

My first company I started grossed 4.1 million in its first year trading.

My second one which I am working on now is aimed in the billions.
    Biotechnology Industry
    Biometric Data Processing Engine

    Online Tutoring Business

Hi everybody, I'm still in college and I'm looking into starting a tutoring business. I know the idea is not new, but I'm looking have a business that is mostly web-based (eg. tutoring via webcam, msn messenger, e-mail). I personally don't enjoy tutoring so I want to start a business like this where I can make money but don't have to do actual tutoring myself.

I think with the increasing use of web-cams, messenger etc. as a way of tutoring will continue to grow and eventually take the place of one-to-one tutoring perhaps. Therefore, I see strong growth in this area.

I realise that there are many of such companies out there like this already. However, I do not think any company has a monopoly hold. As well, this type of tutoring (web-based) from my judgement is still not popular as it should/will be.

I just want to know if there is anybody has any ideas/advice to give me. I don't have any specific questions right now. I have just begun do some one-to-one tutoring right now...but will gradually have others do the tutoring and gradually make it more web-based. Why do you guys think? Thx alot for reading up to here ^^

Thumbs up For the original poster...

Courses to focus on in college:

    Public Speaking
    Marketing

    Organizations to join:

    Toastmasters
    some sort of debate organization

The best way to overcome your fears is to get involved. Join a club or church group that has outgoing people unlike yourself. Pick something that sounds interesting, but a little scary. Commit yourself to attending the meetings and being an active member. Surround yourself with outgoing people, and in a few years, you'll be amazed at your change.

You can do it once you set your mind to! Entrepeunership is such a subjective thing. To define it, or at least to spell out what characteristics one must have in order to be labelled or passed off as an entrepeurner stifles the very being and potential of say someone not possessing the typical attributes of a so called entrepeurner. And no you definitely need not have a MBA degree to start of a business nor to grow one years later down the road.
If you're not confident and are shy- start learning how to overcome that. Practice makes perfect. Hey who knows, you could be a charming smooth talker 5 years from now! But for now, as the slogan of nike goes-Just do it. Dont be afraid. Just go for it, source out clients, foster business relationships with them, if you stuff up, well there's plenty more fish in the sea! As you continue to approach and talk to people in regards to your business, you will polish and pick up skills along the way..and with your 2.5 years of experience i bet u'll do well with contacts and the experience itself. or even if it dont at first, press on. So what are you waiting for, just go for it!

    Hope this helps
    Good luck at all
