If I took a game that has been discontinued from a company like EA, and used it as a start point to make a newer version of it but way better, and obviously change the name and such, is that illegal? Obviously there would be a lot of similarities but I would basically only need it as a blueprint to re write a new game from it thats better. I just don't want to commit myself to this and then find out I can get sued into the stone age.
