Does my university get royalties off anything I develop while attending?

Someone told me yesterday that I should wait till I graduate to launch a number of projects I have due to the fact that the university will be entitled to royalties because "i used their resources", which in reality I haven't.

I pretty much lol at him because he used Gatorade as an example and said that this is why dell dropped out. Any truth to this?

Are you using your university's resources to develop your project? If not, then no.

Best to simply check with your university - they shouldn't be hiding anything from you. Like citizen38 said - as long as you're not using their resources (or being employed by the university) you should be fine. Even if you are using their resources, policies vary among different institutions.

There are many businesses launched at colleges. A local micro brew was launched in one of my professor’s classes. There is also a great book "the student entrepreneur" it’s free to download on kindle. It is all about how to launch a business while attending college and how to use the teachers and resources for your benefit.

If we entrepreneurs owed royalties to everyone who helped us we wouldn't make money.

Also you being a student are paying to use the recourses and if it is a state school it is your tax money paying for the school. Tech fees, bond fees, etc.
