    Club team becoming a NPO

I play on a club team at DePaul University. Could we establish our club as a npo in order to become a legal business and get a business tax? The reason I ask is, if we can do this then we could buy equipment at wholesale and make it more affordable. Is this legal? let alone even possible?

    thank you

You are speaking to two different things. First, most likely, no, you cannot buy products at wholesale because you are not a retailer. However, this has nothing to do with becoming a NPO. As a NPO you may be afforded tax exempt status by the IRS, which would save you money; especially in Chicago with the highest sales tax in the country (thanks Todd!).
