    buying a domain from godaddy

I don't use godaddy, never have, never will.. but just to clarify something as I hear the name so often...

when someone registers a domain with godaddy, does godaddy retain the rights to the domain? or are they 100% to the registrant.
Like I said, for information only, I seem to remember some bad stuff mentioned a long time ago.

Well all registrars hold the control of your domain...as soon as you stop paying them you can't use it, its that simple...but you can transfer to another DNS whenever you wish (they usually charge a small fee).

I don't think godaddy would do anything stupid to piss people off... they're the largest domain registrar on the net.

I've got all my domains with them; nice, cheap and simple.

Yes nik, but some registrars offer a service (godaddy do) whereby for a small fee they will not submit YOUR details. If I whois youngentrepreneur.com I get this report...

    Registrant:
    YoungEntrepreneur.com Inc.
    XXXX H Street XXX-475
    Blaine, WA 98230
    US

    Domain Name: YOUNGENTREPRENEUR.COM

    Administrative Contact:
    TXXXXX, Adam eXXXXX@shaw.ca
    YoungEntrepreneur.com Inc.
    XXXX H Street XXX-475
    Blaine, WA 98230
    US
    XXX.721.0025 fax: XXX.689.1354

    Record expires on 09-Feb-2006.
    Record created on 09-Feb-1999.
Database last updated on 16-Jan-2006 15:29:19 EST.

    Domain servers in listed order:

    NS.SERVINT.COM 209.50.225.13
    NS2.SERVINT.COM 209.50.225.12
I have blocked out a few details with X's for the sake that its not the cleverest thing to give away people's details for email spiders to pick up.

I personally don't bother with the added cost of 'privacy protection' for domains.

When you're starting out, and the website has very little interest.. then no body is going to be bothered with doing a whois on your domain for evil purposes. So you can generally put down your name and personal details.

When the website grows, you'll probably want to incorporate or startup a business over the website, and so you can simply change the domain details to those of your business and/or corporation.

I would steer clear from godaddy from my last experience!

I registered a domain name at the start of this year and i tried to access it but it said my customer number did not exist, kept emailing them with the info and they sent me back the same id number. I copied and pasted it into the ID box and it still said it didnt exist.
Been emailing them for a refund, but they keep tellin me to try again.

cant be bothered now... thats a year of domain name money gone down the drain... plus it was expensive compared to others ive found

godaddy is good for domains only and with that they are the best hands down.

Well when it comes to domains you only need to be looking for the cheapest registrar, afterall you either have a domain or you don't, there are no inbetweens. Hosting on the other hand is what you should have more concern for, the cheapest provider won't necessarily give you the best service.

I bought a few domains a while back, and purchased them through 1and1, they are very cheap and despite what some others say, I have been happy with their service.

I have used godaddy since 1998 - hundreds of domains managed and registered over the years for me and my clients. -- no complaints.

Matter Fact I private label through them.

DOMAIN REGISTRATION ONLY! no other services

Any ICANN certified registrar (manages) your domain for you - take the word "ownership" how you will.

    Woah godaddy = bad...

Used to use them for several sites... , then switched to 1and1 since we got a server through them...

So, it comes time to transfer a domain, and they apparently do this through some other company in germany? They send out auto emails to approve the transfer... which I respond to, and still nothing... sooo many hoops to jump through just to do that.

Thats not even the worst of it. When one of the sites started getting a lot of traffic, the bandwidth numbers would be one thing (these are from previous days) and then another (higher ie more expensive) number later...

. Thats the short story lol....
