Online web designing business...

I was just ready to start my own web design business when my dad suddenly mentioned to me that it may not yet be legal. I know that there are people who do offer web design as a paid service that are younger than 16 and I was just wondering what the legalities of it all are.

If anyone could let me know anything on this then it would be greatly appreciated.

Thankyou,
Sam

There are no legalities that I am aware of except that you need to register as self-employed and fill out your own tax forms.

Although I live in the UK, perhaps it's different in the US.

I'm in the UK as well...

So there's no actual laws against it?

Starting a business under 18 can be hard, because minors can disaffirm a contract. Because of this, many clients will not want to work with you since they will have no binding guarantee that you'll hold up your end of the deal. I waited to start my web design business for 2 years because of that.

Hi Sam,

There is no law against a minor starting his/her own business. It is definitely in your best interested to consult with an attorney as there may be reasons for a parental signature.
Our office does have a few young entrepreneurs that we work with and they attened one of the local high schools in our area.
Please feel free to give me a call at the office. I would be more than happy to schedule a free 1/2 hour consultation between you and an attorney here and it would be a good idea for a parent to sit in on the consult.
Good luck to you in your new venture!

Kindly,

Lisa Snyder
