I need a lawyer to write an employment contract

I'm working on an internet business and will be hiring independent contractors. I need a lawyer to write an employment contract for these contractors to sign. I think I will be hiring mainly people who live in California (technology oriented website).

Try Law Resources from Martindale.com: Lawyer Locator and Attorney Directory and search for a type of lawyer in your area.

That was a cool idea. The Entrepreneur website has a link to USLegalforms.com, where I bought a good generic contract for $18.95. That's all I really needed. I bookmarked that legal forms site. Thanks.

If you think you need additional assistance, please contact me at 216-348-5431 and myself or one of the attorneys at our firm would be glad to provide a free initial consultation.

It's great to see an attorney on the site! Your advice will be very valuable to many. Consider spreading your wisdom here though. I think you'll find that by doing so you will be able to build your reputation here and actually attract more business than simply saying, "I am available for a free initial consultation."

Hey Byzantium,

Generic contracts are great and I'm happy that you saved money. I think you should get an attorney anyway and pay them a $100 consultation fee just to make sure that you are covered.

You see, sometimes because they are so generic, there are specifics in your business that needs to be incorporated. I'm not sure what business you are in-but seeing that you have people out there that are representing your business but are independent contractors, I would be really careful.

I got a lawyer. I'm not sure where you are. She's in San Gabriel Valley. Please PM if you are interested. I'd hate for you to send your sales dogs out and they mess up your company because they have no care for your reputation and dreams.

Be on the safe side and have the contract reviewed and your business evaluated so an attorney can structure this right for you.

Great comment. Online legal forms are just as Byzantium mentioned - Generic. There are circumstances where such a form is sufficient. However, you are not in a position to determine whether it is sufficient. Only an attorney will be able to identify all the legal issues surrounding the situation, issues of which you may have never considered or even been aware.

Additionally, the majority (or at least a large number) of attorneys will provide free consultation. I would personally never pay $100 consultation fee, but that is just me.

Either way, you are best off consulting an attorney rather than using an online form. Hell, take the online form with you to have the attorney look at it and explain what issues will be raised by using the form, and then you can determine what your best option is.

LT, I am in Sacramento. Same state, but too far away from LA to use your lawyer. Maybe your lawyer can recommend somebody in Sacramento or the Bay Area that would be good? Ask him/her, and PM me with the info. Thanks.

This is funny to say but awhile back I read the "Business Contracts for Dummies" helped me alot. I have written half of my contracts and the other half I aleast understand what the lawyer is talking about. You library might even have a copy.

I went to an attorney. He took one look at what I'd downloaded and threw it in the trash. He then said "you're starting a business, so why use a form from some website?" or words to that effect. I ended up paying him $1000 up front to write me a contract.
