Hi, folks.

I am preparing to write a comprehensive, research-based handbook on the legal issues affecting an entrepreneur. This handbook will not provide legal advice, but instead will act as a starting point for helping entrepreneurs begin to learn about areas of law directly affecting them.

My question to you all is:

Which areas of law would you find most helpful being discussed in the handbook?

For example:

Business entity selection (C Corps v. S Corps v. LLCs, etc.)
Intellectual property (Copyrights, Patents, & Trademarks)

There are no wrong answers or bad suggestions here. Anything that you would like to know more about is exactly what I am looking for.

If you could give three outline structures as an example in the handbook, you will give three view points. As you know an LLC is not a Type S and neither are a Type C so showing structure examples for all three and what types of businesses fit each (as a suggestion only), then I would consider that both informative and helpful.

Sounds like a massive undertaking. In addition to entity selection and IP, I'd touch on agency, contracts, and employment.

Those are great general topics that all starting entrepreneurs should know, however those are answer readily out there. Perhaps you can include sub-topics or a checklist that are critical for entrepreneurs in starting a business.

I wish there was a handbook/source that had stuff like 1) how to lease a commercial property and what clauses to look for in a lease agreement 2) data rentention policies and taking into account Statute of Limitations 3) employment law e.g. workers comp, complying with OSHA etc. 3) commercial insurance / products liability insurance 4) basic tax law issues, so on and so forth.

Usually I have to go to many different government websites to just begin my research. If there was just one place that someone can go to, that would be best.

Right now I am faced with questions about copyright issues, and trademarks. You will want to include a trademark or copyright dont mean anything until you enforce them

a couple of points:

1. i'd like the booklet to be specialised to my in industry
i.e. "legal strategies for mining" or "mortgage brokers" or "family doctors" or "accountants"
reading a generic book is not appealing because it's not specialised enough to cover any specific issues relevant to my industry

2. focus on forms, checklists, templates and case studies rather than prose

3. supplement materials such as directories and multimedia

4. focus on strategies such as "defenses against negligence claims" or "using contracts for risk management" rather than "how to choose business structure or how to file for patent"

5. endorsement from industry authorities such as magic circle firms

that said, if I was gonna make money in law I'd probably do it in litigation funding

Can you include The Madrid Protocol as i dont think to many entrepreneurs no to much about it.

you need to include information on patents. I have read books on patents and none of them actually tell you how much patents cost.
