    Dating Website Insurance

    Hi,

I am looking for information on the legal issues with running a dating/social networking site. I haven't been real successful with finding useful information.

Can anyone provide tips on what types of legal issues might surface from owning and running a dating site and what type of insurance is needed? I also could use the name of some companies that offer the insurance that I need.

Also I am curious if some believe the insurance is not imperative.

    Thanks so much,
    Brian

I would be inclined to think you'd want some type of general liability insurance. However, considering that the teen suicide resulting from excessive harassment through MySpace was not deemed to be the company's fault, I'd imagine you'd be pretty safe against lawsuits unless you either stand in the way of law enforcement or somehow encourage (whether intentionally or otherwise) abusive behavior on/through the site.

Thanks JLeezer I read somewhere general liability may not be suited for this type of endeavor. Doing searches comes up with almost no information.

I want to be sure that I am properly protected for the unforseen, whatever that may be.

Likely it won't be needed but better to be safe and prepared that sorry and unprepared.

Anyone esle running this type of site???

    Thanks,
    Brian

I would be inclined to say that you should find yourself a great insurance agent that specializes in business policies and go ask him or her. They're going to be able to tell you exactly what will and won't be covered by the policies they write. Sometimes the Internet just can't give you all the answers.

I didn't know that they were able to get insurance. Considering the fact that there new it's probably going to be a lot. Your best insurance is probably a lawyer just in case somebody decides that you didn't deliver on a promise.

In the end, it is still just a business with various liabilities based on statistics. Insurance companies understand statistics; that's how they do their business. I don't think it will be more expensive than insuring any other business for a specific amount of general liability.

    Crawdigger,

One idea is to consult with a business insurer, and develop a customized policy.

Also, google "cyber liability insurance". We are actually general counsel for a dating/social matchmaking website that recently went this route, and several other internet-based startups we work with have done so as well.
