    Consultants

    The Question

By labeling yourself a consultant do you have to obtain liscensing for the specific field you are specializing in.

I've been sitting here for 10 minutes trying to figure out how to make my question clearer and I'm stumped, good luck.

    Snark-free answer

I guess the answer would lie in the field in which you are consulting. Depending on the industry, obviously, some would REQUIRE specific certifications and/or licenses.

HOWEVER...... more often than not, there are some very relaxed rules in regards to many types of consulting. Of course, since I'm trying to come up with the perfect example of this, nothing comes to mind. I can reference the many classes offered at community centers in Los Angeles featuring psychics and other consultant-y types whose credentials always seemed a bit shady to me....

I would guess that a safety net would be to operate the consultancy as an LLC?? What do some our (actually) knowledgable community members think?

Depends on state and federal laws controlling the industry. Operating under a limited-liability entity will not protect you in all cases, including those you're potentially facing.

A consultant is simply one who is consulted. If you know your stuff, I don't see any reason you would need a license. If you're a noob, it will show = )

i know a producer who mainly does consulting work now... why? because he's been around forever and has produced more ads and movies than you can poke a stick at and has the knowledge and expertise to help others in their productions to be a success... it just wouldn't make sense for him to be a consultant at the start of his career now would it?
