    What's in a name?

Is a brand name really very important in the success of the product or company? Isn't making high quality product and a good marketing campaign enough to make a product sell?

No, a brand name isn't important enough to make or break a business generally speaking with some exceptions. That should be an obvious answer given how many companies have came up with random ass names for their companies and have striked it big, including made up words. What matters is how brandable the name is, aka don't make the domain name 20 characters long and make sure it's available. Aside from this, generally speaking, a name does not make the business.

Are you asking 'how important is the name we choose for the product ?' or 'you are asking how important is building a brand name?'. There is a difference between the two. If you are asking 'how important is building a brand name?', brand name is vital as your company grows and your products become popular, brand name and brand image are both complimentary to a product's success. As brand name distinguishes your quality product from your competitors. with a brand name you can build a group of loyal customers. Customer's recognize your product with brand name. As you expand to new markets, you automatically get the advantage of your 'brand name' or 'brand power' that you enjoy in your parent market. ex: the brand name of mcdonald's, the image that it enjoyed in the United state's market helped it expand to other part of the world, though through franchising , people in other countries recognized and accepted the brand quickly only because of the brand name it enjoyed and continues to do so.... but if you ask 'how important is the name we choose for the product' well, the name doesn't matter as long as it is not odd or something controversial which people may not like. Otherwise the name you choose is not important, rightly said, it is the quality of the product and success of your marketing campaign that matter.

Paulson is one hundred percent right in my opinion!

Your actual brand name isn't make-or-break, though once you have decided on a name and an identity for your brand, you need to make sure you build up your brand in the eyes of your community.
Brand awareness is extremely important in today's world, what with all the competition around in most areas.

Everything in business is important. Name is VERY important. You want to name your company name so that it bounces in people head longer than any of your competitors for people to remember your company better.

Try to name your company with 2 words starting with same alphabet and have rhythm do it.

Why do you think Coca-Cola dominated drink industry? People remember it better.
Why do you think BlackBerry dominated smart phone industry? Used to be Palm Pilots but after they changed it to Palm, they fell off.
Why do you think Google dominated internet industry? These names bounces in peoples head longer than any other names and people use it more often.

A name - especially if it is a business logo or caption, means a lot. Conversely, if there is a high description and someone is feeling not happy with your service or brand, your caption can be byword and a term that others will be punning on.

name is an identity and we associate a product or company with that particular word. Why do you need a name? What happens if you don't have a name?

I also believe than a name is an identity. Whatever the name may be, it will help the product be identified. But, what is the success rating of having something to be identified with? Is there a winning name or a downfall name?

Well, business is really taking risk. I guess, a good name is just as important as having a good marketing campaign. If the campaign succeeds, the brand name wins, too, and vice versa. And when a product launch succeeds, it is always good to have a brand name to stick with. That is what people remember it by.

    Classic MBA question.

Haagen Daaz, Michelob etc prove that you can build a no-name into a success - you endow it with its own meanings.

Easy-Jet, Virgin, Coca Cola etc prove that a name helps to pave the road for a new product.

The answer is too complex to go into here
