All great advice here...I'll pitch in too. I started this venture with a few hundred for printing post cards and sent to all medias etc. I got FREE publicity COMPLETELY around the world within a year even leading eventually to 16 minutes running time on the Discovery Channel.
I may have had a "noisemaker" but you certainly don't need that! I started also with bugging the smallest newspaper in my community to do a story on me and "worked" that to bigger medias. It could have been about a new hot dog stand instead of an invention.
There are many places for free publicity spots for even a hot dog stand if you really want to try. Try for some new item on the menu or a spot for customers when it is raining... to get you FREE publicity in food medias...whatever...you can do it for any business.
Even Fortune 100 companies rely on FREE publicity with a new launch of something/product. Advertising for a startup project most times is just too expensive. Try your trade magazines too. Cooking magazine...landscaping,local newsletter...whatever...they will help you start because they want a future loyal advertiser!
A FREE story about your business goes MUCH MUCH further than advertising sometimes, sometimes it shows you are brand new and can make the consumer leary too....just "play it" smart
